Default Denon questions

I'm looking at the Denon 789, it will probably suit me just fine. The problem is that the best price for it comes from TheNerds.net, and they aren't listed as an authorized dealer on Denon's website. Comments?

Next, what about Denon refurbs, the prices are great, but the warranty is only 90 days, and they've been fixed once already? Comments?

Last, there's a good price, $499, on the Denon 2308CI, but it's last year's model, with some differences between it and the 789. It was originally a higher end model last year, and has 2 HDMI inputs, while the 789 has 3. Comments?

Refurb can be repaired unit or returned units. When the company have to Rebox the electronics they call it Refurb.

Okay, but they still only come with a 90 day warranty, which gives me pause. I mean the pricing is great, but how advisable is to chance a refurb with a warranty that short?

I have the 789, while the price is a little high, I can tell you it was worth every penny. It's one of the best budget receivers out there with the Denon quality.

I'll tell you one thing, Denon's manuals are confusing and set up is difficult at first. But don't listen to people who have given bad reviews saying "it sounds great but it was so difficult to set up that I will never buy a Denon ever again".

The set up is not that difficult; it's only slightly confusing at first. Just play around with the setting on the on-screen menu display and set up becomes a breeze. Make sure your HDMI cables are working properly. I wasted 2 days trying to figure out why I wasn't getting a picture and only sound; tech support and online forums weren't helping (probably because it was a brand new model). I went out on a limb and bought new HDMI cables and everything works perfectly now. I only buy at authorized dealers only just to avoid potential problems.

The 2308ci sounds like a great deal; it has just about every feature the 789 has; audio and video passthrough, auto lipsync, Audyssey MultEQ calibration. However it doesn't have Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding. You are going to miss out on some great sound features and your system is not going to be as future proof. I would pay the extra money and get a 789. I think you would get more of a long run investment with it. I have never bought a refurbished receiver before; maybe someone on this site has experience with that.

The problem with Amazon is that they're out of stock on the 789, and their website says "Usually ships within 1 to 2 months". I can get it locally for the same price, at Fry's Electronics until the 16th, but they aren't listed as an authorized dealer either. I sent an inquiry to Denon about TheNerds, but it will be at least Monday before I get an answer, and Thenerds are a Mon-Fri bunch too.

There is a refurbed 2309CI for $429, but again a 90 day warranty, and this one is tempting. They also have the 989 for $569, and the 2308CI for $410.

I would go with the 2309ci. The Audyssey MultiXT and Dynamic EQ are worth it alone Imho.. (The 2308 don't have the Dynamic EQ, the 2309 yes. It makes a huge difference if you don't listen to stuff at reference level)

The 90 day warranty doesn't put you off?

Yeah, but you have to send the equip out of state to take advantage of it. So, I dunno.

The 1909 and the 789 are practically the same from what I hear. Good choice; tell us how you like it.

If you can get the 1909 for around the same price go with that option, it is almost identical to the 789, main difference is build quality and the 1909 is sold at high end stores. I have the 1909 and love it, can't go wrong for the price.

I purchased a Denon AVR-789 approximately 3 weeks ago. I bought it locally at an authorized Denon dealer. I asked if they would price match Amazon and they did. The price at that time was $549. It took me a few days after work to tweak all of the settings, but I recommend Denon 100%. I've had Pioneer and Yamaha in the past, and I feel the Denon is the best overall.

Default Important

One thing very important is that I bought my Denon from an un-authorized dealer (Ebay). The receiver came from Japan. When I went Denon's website to download the new firmware upgrade's (cost $100) it would not let me becasue the product was not purchased through an authorized dealer.

Hope this helps!

Yes it does help. I was looking at the 2309 that was a few bucks less from an on line retailer that is not on Denon's list of authorized dealers. So I'll pay a bit more for proper manufacturer support.

Dakmart is an authorized Denon dealer that sells refurbished and they give a 1 year warranty. I have purchased from them and all was well.

They have the 789 listed for $409 and the 1909 for $429

Call 6th Ave and ask for their best price. They'll make you a deal and they're an authorized dealer.

I purchased my 1909 from 6th Ave a few weeks ago. I think it was around $480 with free shipping. Anyway, .. I'd buy again from 6th in a second.
