Default Score: A Film Music Documentary (2017)

Gravitas Ventures | 2016 | 93 min | Not rated | Sep 05, 2017

Single disc (1 BD-R 50)

What makes a film score unforgettable? Featuring Hans Zimmer, James Cameron, Danny Elfman, John Williams, Quincy Jones, Trent Reznor, Howard Shore, Rachel Portman, Thomas Newman, Randy Newman, Leonard Maltin, and the late James Horner and Garry Marshall, SCORE: A FILM MUSIC DOCUMENTARY brings Hollywood's elite composers together to give viewers a privileged look inside the musical challenges and creative secrecy of the world's most international music genre: the film score. A film composer is a musical scientist of sorts, and the influence they have to complement a film and garner powerful reactions from global audiences can be a daunting task to take on. The documentary contains interviews with dozens of film composers who discuss their craft and the magic of film music while exploring the making of the most iconic and beloved scores in history: "James Bond", "Star Wars," "Indiana Jones," "Pirates of the Caribbean," "Titanic," "The Social Network," "Mad Max: Fury Road," and "Psycho."

I had sort of heard that this was coming but really knew no details. Today the review popped up so I had to go watch it. I purchased it digitally on VUDU as I couldn't wait and it's excellent. A bit disappointed the physical copy is a BD-R but I will be picking it up anyway. Highly recommended if you are a film score fan.

I gather that there won't be a BD or DVD release? That's a shame.

There is a DVD release, but just like the BD-R release, it's a DVD-R burn.

I wish this would stop happening. BUT... it's better than nothing I guess.

Anyone recently see this? I contributed to the crowdfunding campaign and saw it theatrically but since have been playing my Blu-ray in the background while working on things. Love hearing from all the different composers in it.

The 2-disc BD/DVD combo pack available directly through Epicleff Media is a regular pressed BD-ROM (and regular pressed DVD-ROM, for what it's worth). I believe it even has more special features compared to the Gravitas Ventures BD-R.

Saw this at the Avalon theater here in Washington DC the other night with the director in attendance - the post Q&A was fascinating - glad I held out in seeing this (and on the big screen - perfect!)

Neo, Thanks so much for the heads-up regarding the differences between the Epicleff pressed BD and the Gravitas burnt BD-R...I would have never known if it wasn't for your post !!

I already have the Gravitas one, but I'm gonna grab a copy of the Epicleff as well (who wants burnt when you you can get pressed, right ?)...So, as far as the special features go, I'll have both releases, so that will cover ALL of those !!

Thanks again man !!

If anyone likes this kind of stuff I actually run a YouTube channel and site dedicated to behind the scenes stuff with composers.

I take a more rough and unpolished approach (also because I have zero funding and am a 1-man crew), but I have 8 years of worth of great content and a lot more depth, including 2 weeks filming with Hans Zimmer as he rehearsed for his tour .

Thanks for sharing this. I really like film composer interviews but I don't see enough of them, so I'm looking forward to checking this out.

I also still have this documentary purchased on iTunes for about a month, and I haven't watched it yet. I'm excited to see it but I keep procrastinating.

This doc is a great surface level entry into the film music process. I know some of the people who worked on it, and I've also interviewed many of the composers featured and they all did a tremendous job. You won't get anything too in-depth with this doc, but it's still a great insight.

I'm not a musician or a composer, but film music is how I fell in love with cinema, so I started Film.Music.Media as a side project. I think even if you love directing, editing, cinematography or anything, that music is the key to opening all of that up. I realized by keeping the production small (just me and a camera, single shot setup), you get more genuine answers. I don't prep questions in advance either, it makes it more like a real discussion than a prepared statement. After work I usually mosey on to composer's studios and we have nice long interviews, they're so open about their process.

I too noticed a gap in composer interviews and BTS footage, so I tried to fix that. So hopefully there's stuff there you'll like. My hope is that it'll become a great resource for people.

Hi. This version is a single Blu-ray disc. I have just received the Blu-ray+DVD version directly from https://www.score-movie.com/copy-of-...on-autographed. On that page two versions are available. The above double disc is available for $24.99 and the autographed version for $34.99. It clearly states this release is region free. I live in Australia (Region B). I have just placed the Blu-ray disc into my player and it plays perfectly. The image for this disc clearly states at the top of the cover artwork "BLU-RAY + DVD" as distinct from the image associated with this thread for the single disc version. This double disc version is not listed on Blu-ray.com. I recommend anyone interested in this title visit the above web link.
