Have you got a recentish system software version? If so this router should be a piece of cake to set up.

I have a D-Link WBR-1310 and it works fine. My bro is using a Linksys router, not sure which model.
I have only had a couple of issues the first was after the 1st RFoM patch I couldn't join any games. I switched my DNS settings and that took care of that. The second was a DNS error just this past week while setting up a account in the UK ps store for the upcoming Heavenly Sword demo ![]() I got the error for about 15-20 minutes then I rebooted my PS3 and everything was fine. I did just upgrade my service with my ISP and we had some wicked storms come through my area so the second problem was probably due to that. |

This thread's as good a place as any for this:
My sister got her new PS3 last week and I was trying to setup the wireless Internet for her on it and was just failing miserably. I'm using a Netgear WGR614 (no suffix) and I know it meets all the necessary requirements. I'm just plain stumped. I can't get the wireless connection up. Any troubleshooting/brainstorming ideas? |

I have billion and it works well.
Trouble shooting Confirm DHCP is enabled (or enter the selected IP address - make sure it's not blocked by the firewall) Make sure there is no MAC address blocking or get the MAC address of the computer and enable it on the router. Wireless is like a fancy radio set. So the base station and computer (ps3) need to be on the same 'station' channel. Countries vary but there are between 10 and about 14 to choose from. There are auto sense options on many devices, if you want to use this make certain it's enabled. Once we have a common channel we need a 'station' name SSID for security this is frequently turned off on the router SSID Broadcast, so the computer will not automatically pick up the name. Now the encryption comes into play. Every wireless network should use WPA encryption WEP is like leaving the key in the front door. Enter this key into the computer. Communication should be established. The cheat list Enable DHCP Enable SSID Broadcast disable on the router (don't forget to configure and re-enable one tested) MAC Address blocking Encryption |

JTK, see if there's a firmware update for the router. After that, see if the router works with a wired Ethernet connection.
If you can get the router to work, test the signal strength with a laptop. Place the router where it's supposed to be placed and see if the signal is strong enough to where the PS3 is supposed to be. Moving the antenna of the router may help. fuad |

This might sound dumb. Okay I have a wireless verizon modem downstairs in my living room, I want to be able to play in my bedroom though. So is it as simple as getting a wireless router in my room and then using an ethernet cable with the ps3. Explain please really stupid when comes to anything with networks

I DO have the choice to switch it to WPA-PSK, but I'm not sure the PS3 and/or the companion Netgear laptop device can run with that. Can they? http://www.netgear.com/Products/Adap...ers/WG121.aspx ^^ This is how my sister is getting her PC on the network two floors down. It looks like it's WEP only for this device. Quote:

DHCP does not get blocked by Windows firewall.
Those linksys, netgear, D-link, Belkin routers are actualy very simple NAT devices. Just follow the included instructions to setup a basic wirless network. Then test it to see if it works. Then add encrytion. USE WPA-TIKP/WPA-AES as they are the most secure and the easiest to set up. Just enable WPA-TIKP/WPA-AES encryption in router's http setup page, usualy located in the wirles security section. Then enter a pass phrase. Then on PS3 have it serch for WIFI connections, do automatic settings for every setting, except encyription select WPA-TIKP and input the exact passphrase you did on router (case sensitive). voiala Wifi on PS3. Most retail NATs have a build in fire wall with all ports blocked. Thus it's secure enough to disable Windows firewall on all your PC's that conncet to the internet via router. Firewalls don't protect againts viruses and Spyware which usualy have "phone home" applets embeded that can compromise any firewall. Always have Antivirus and Anti spyware installed and running in backgroud. Because even if you don't have anything a hacker would want on your computer he/she can use your computer to do all of his or her biddings (zombie bot). |

Two routers I would recommend without hesitation:
1.) Apple AirPort Extreme (omg... I love it like a fat kid loves cake) 2.) D-Link DGL-4300 I own both of these and find them to work flawlessly. (The D-Link replaced a series of Linksys routers that I was never happy with, and to this day I will never recommend a Linksys product. They're cheap, but you get what you pay for.) FYI - For connecting devices you don't NEED wireless for, I'd also recommend the D-Link DHP-301, which is a wired powerline networking kit. Basically they use your home power lines for home networking. I have my Xbox 360 hooked up with these and they work great, albeit expensive. But again, cost is not an object if the tech WORKS. |

I have a Linksys router and it works just fine for me. My fiancee is able to look at Youtube on the laptop and I'm able to download a demo on the PS3 without any lag or any other problems.

But what about my sister's device that only does WEP? I don't want to knock her off the network. Some day I'll upgrade hardware when they finally get this new protocol figured out, which seems like never. |

I am using the Apple Airport Extreme with an express to extend the range (and listen to music).
The Apple airport system has always worked far far better than anything else I have ever tried. My dad used to love the wireless network at home, until i moved out and took my airport with me. Now he tried 5 different wireless routers and half of them didn't work at all. So instead of buyng the more expensive Apple Airport (and cause he doesn't have a mac to set it up with) he hardwired most of the computers, and the one laptop that is still wireless, he only uses to look at websites and such. I also have the MAC address filtering turned on with my system and it still workes with my laptops, my Wii, and PS3. |

I ended up buying a Belkin wireless g. It works great so far for my PS3 and Wii. I've downloaded tons of demos and trailers, and have played RFOM online perfectly. Belkin offers a lifetime warranty which is a plus. The set up was a breeze, which was great for me because this is the first time I've owned a wireless router. You can set your security as tight as you want it. WEP/WPA encryption, MAC address filtering, disabled/enable SSID broadcasting, etc. I had to do some research to learn what all these terms mean. Now I'm a router expert. ![]() Hope this helps ![]() |

For those of you having NAT issues, this is how I setup routers with gaming systems;
First know your router settings. IP address - wireless SSID & Encryption key (if applicable) I always disable uPnP. Alot of linksys router have issues cleaning the uPnP data and can cause ports to not open properly while leaving old ports open. Plus its a potential security risk. Here is a hypothetical setup for PS3, I always use static IPs 192.168.X.254 - IP of PS3 255.255.255.0 - Subnet Mask 192.168.X.1 - Default gateway 192.168.X.1 - Primary DNS X= what ever the third octet contains, it varies from router to router. If you are unsure you can check the IP of your PC and find out. Now log into router and set your DMZ host to 192.168.X.254. After you have set everything reboot the router and PS3. Then your will have open NAT. Things get tricky when you have improperly connected WAN devices, like DSL modems with built in DHCP servers. Westell modems have this setting and you are basically going through two routers. You will need to properly put the device in bridge mode and configure the router to handle the PPPoE conenction. I setup gaming systems on networks daily (its my job ![]() If anybody is having NAT issues feel free to PM me and I will gladly give you advice. |
