Default Looking for someone to clear something up

My dad is looking into getting a new receiver (don't know which one yet, any recommendations $500 range) if he uses hdmi to the receiver, through to the tv will he always have to have the receiver on for sound i.e. he doesn't like it on when he watches like say the news. Otherwise if he doesn't and uses optical cables will he still be able to use the new codecs (DTS-MA, Dolby TruHD).

P.S. He has the Panasonic BD-35.

You didn't answer his questions.

No, your dad will not always have to have the receiver on. He can turn it off and turn the TV speakers back on for the news and things like that. Just make sure he remembers to turn the TV speakers back off when the receiver is on.

If he uses optical cable he can not get the Dolby Tru HD and DTS HD MA soundtracks. These can only be sent via an HDMI cable.

No, just turn on the tv and turn the volume up as if he never had a receiver.

Unless you do what I did, I removed my speakers from my LCD. I wanted to take some of the weight off of the wall mount. I am using a 1 arm wall mount so I can pull it out and turn it different angles.

And like andyman1970 said, just turn the volume down before you cut the TV off. It's not going to hurt anything if you leave them on. It just might sound a little funny with the TV speakers and surrounds going at the sametime.

or it may make it sound better, I doubt it.
