Hey guys
Im just having a hard time understanding my internet connection and if im getting all that i was promised with the connection. so i live in Canada and have shaw as a service provider. the link shows what connection im signed up for http://www.shaw.ca/en-ca/ProductsSer...ernet/Xtreme-I in short it says i get up to 10mbps for downloads and 1mbps for upload so heres the problem cause im just not to knowledgeable with rates and all. when using utorrent as my torrent client. when downloading some torrents i get a max download transfer rate of 1.3mb as stated by utorrent is that a correct speed im suppose to be getting ??? or am i being jacked and not getting the full 10mbps im suppose to get ??? thats where it confuses me, cause if it does do 10mbps then wouldnt a 50mb file download in 5 seconds ??? ive read online about somin with download speed is KB or somin and transfer is kb, and somin about dividing the download speed by 8 to get a transfer speed or somin. if that is so then the 1.3mb seems to stand true with the 10mb promised by the service provider. any help would be great to clear things up for me and to tell me if im getting my monies worth from my provider. thanks in advance. |

Let's get a few terms straightened out.
If you have Internet service rated at 10 Mb/s - that means you have a max download speed of 10,000 kb/s (kilo bits per second) or 10 Mb/s (mega bits per second). When you download files, the files have a size associated with them measured in mega btye (MB). There are too many factors that mess with real transfer times that it is very difficult to wrap your arms around the actual numbers. Once you get over network latency, protocol overhead, driver efficiency, dependency on the server traffic that you are connected too, and other technical things that inherrently slow you down. Just remember that transfer rates will vary widely from different servers. If you want a good ballpark here it is: At a 10 mb/s transfer (download) rate - you should expect to get a 1 MB file in about 3-4 seconds (this is a very conservative number, typically you'll beat this) If you are concerned that your are paying for 10 mb/s and not getting it, try a speed test such as the one here. I recently had an issue with Bell High-speed. I subscribe to their Fibe16 service, which is supposed to give me up to 16mpbs. After running tests for a several weeks every few days I was avering only 2.6mpbs. I called them up and they were able to fix it over the phone. I am now averaging 12.4mpbs, which is fine by me. Call Shaw...maybe they can help you out.
