Default Two Questions...Please Answer!

Would really appreciate if people would answer just a couple questions I have:

1) I have a PS3...so thats how I have Blu-Ray. My question is with PS3 you get Blu-ray at a much cheaper price. Now I know blu-ray prices have went down recently but not too long ago a Sony Blu-Ray would be so much more expensive than the PS3 which includes Blu-Ray. What is the reason for this? Im just wondering...is the PS3 Blu-Ray not as good as the other Sony Blu-Ray players?

2) Watched Batman - The Dark Knight on Blu-Ray. So they had "IMAX shots" in the movie...which filled the ENTIRE screen without zooming. Clarity was AMAZING. My question is why cant the whole movie and every other movie from now be filmed with 100% "IMAX shots" so no bars or zooming. Pure heaven. I dont know much lol so fill me in on this one...

1. The PS3 is still better than any other BD player on the market for many reasons.

2. Director's choose to shoot films at various aspect ratios, unfortunately, 1.78:1 is not one of them.

Regarding 1 but then how come PS3 was priced much lower than a regular Sony Blu if it truly had a better Blu player? Im not questioning it sorry, I love my Blu to death at the moment lol...just asking out of curiosity.

Thanks about 2. Though I dont see why they wouldnt want to shoot an entire movie like that...but guess Im a newbie lol.

The PS3 is sold at a loss. The original 60 gigger cost Sony $800 to manufacture. They make it up on game licensing. I believe the manufacturing cost on the current models is still close to $400.

Filming a movie in IMAX is insanely expensive and not practical for an entire movie like The Dark Knight. It does look great though...

I'm gonna have to find movies that fill the entire screen without zooming for when I get the new plasma in January Currently being unemployed it'll seem much longer to get through that 100 hours break-in time.

Many other players still have freezing issues with certain blu-ray discs, whereas the PS3 has none, not to mention it's pretty much the fastest booting player. Plus its got wireless internet, it's a gaming console, upconverting dvd player and cd player all in one

I've been through over 200 BR movies and have not had one yet freeze on me and my current setup. Good thing you mentioned the boot speed, because I can use those extra 10 seconds, that it takes my BR player to load. BD-Live, I could care less about, the 51FD has been recognized, with current FW as one of the best out of the current crop of BR players to do upconvert, oh, and the Pio can play CD's too, and is in fact a better machine at reproducing music. And not to rub it in, it's also got 30 more "tweaks" to improve sound and picture, of which the PS3 does not have. My BRP does not use 250 watts of electricity, produce tons of heat or have a load fan. Additionally, it is not as ugly as the PS3 either.

And no, I am not a "Sony" hater, in fact I am a Sony "fan-boy", however admitingly hate the PS3 design and current crop of games. And just picked up three new Sony electronic devices for X-Mas this year too.

I agree.. I'd pay about $10 more for an "IMAX" version over the regular BD version, if they could do that..

Why? Just so it fills the screen? You don't need IMAX for that.

Films will always be presented in the aspect ratio chosen by the director. Personally, I prefer 'scope' or 2.40:1. It is so much more immersive, and on a proper setup, you will not notice 'black bars' because they will blend-in with the frame.

I disagree profusely........ and I have 2 PS3s

As far as "Why oh why don't my movies fill the screen"

Read this......

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=72428

and this

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=38161

Also, the IMAX cameras are BIG/HEAVY/LOUD making them impractical for many applications.

If you want to have the "entire screen" filled all the time, then just invest in a CIH setup.... It's basically a Projector, Additional lense, and a self-masking curtain setup...

I wouldnt mind paying extra either. Its not just that it fills the screen. Its also because it does it without zooming or anything and is amazingly clear.

As for the loud noise and stuff well isnt that what they should be working on? Find technology to help reduce that so IMAX full films will be the way to go for the future.

I got your back! And, you forget to mention that some models, such as mine, play SACD (which the other players do not). And, the updates that make the PS3 better and better. And, and, and, etc.

everyone knows the ps3 is the best bluray player right now. everywhere you go to research blurays they all admit it. Whoever debates it , is in denial. Wirless updating and bdlive is awesome. some may say blah to bd live, but why not have it if you could?

Ya I personally also have the PS3 and no complains. I was just asking out of curiosity as I have not seen Blu on other Blu-ray players so was wondering if I was missing out on anything with my PS3 Blu...but guess not .

what would I be in denial about? PS3 isn't the best player for everyone.... plain and simple.... there ARE better players out there, but they come at a premium also.

I have two PS3s, so I'm certainly not "in denial" my next player WILL NOT be a PS3, as it will be a player for my dedicated theater, not a loud, non-IR, unit that won't fit into a dedicated component rack.

Plus one of my PS3s took a crap with probably only 25-50 hours of use on it.... so I wouldn't say they're the greatest example of "perfected design" out there.....

Like I said before, get a self-masking projector setup if you want the picture to fill the screen without needing to be zoomed, because you won't be seeing movies filmed exclusively in an aspect ratio that will fit a standard HDTV.
