I have n00b questions, please answer =) - Blu-ray Forum

Hi, I searched around first before I posted and found a few answers before posting (ie: black bars and what's coming out on blu-ray). But some things I didn't find at all or have to deal with my setup.

I have a PS3 connected via HDMI to my Samsung LNS3251D 32" LCD HDTV to watch Blu-ray and play PS3 games.

Whenever I load a game/movie, the screen goes blank temporarly and makes as someone else said a "popping" or as I say a "crackeling" sound then proceeds as normal. I have grown to kind of ignore this, but why does that happen?

When I have the PS3 set to 1080i I get TONS of ghosting when playing games, it is especially noticeable when text appears on screen then goes away to another screen. So I have taken it down to just 720p.

I get tons of grain when watching movies though? How do I fix that? 300 and Ocean's 13 look just awful!!!

Last one, unless I remember another, is when I go to the store and look at the HDTV and Blu-Ray setups the movies look like they are shot by a "camcorder" for a lack of a better word. It kind of looks like something out of the public acces channel. I am not sure how to describe exactly. It looks like the entire movie is being filmed live in front of you I guess. When I bring home the same movie, it does not look anything like I saw it in stores. Again why is that?

I feel like I am two years old all over again.

try turning off DNIe.

also lower your "sharpness" setting

have you tried using a calibration dvd to help properly set the Display settings (Brightness,Contrast,Color..etc)?

heheh we have the same TV. It's the sharpness that you have to lower...

Oceans 13 and 300 look like that normally.....someone correct me if I am wrong

300 has grain and Oceans is just not a great BD, (PQ wise)

Lower sharpness, I'll try that. The turning off DNIe I haven't figured out.

Oh new reply by miokti... ok so lowering sharpness should solve the problem. Will do.

Does that make the movies look like they do in store as well? Or does that have to do with the type of TV and contrast ratios and other things I do not fully understand?

300 had grain added to it (so it's supposed to look grainy). Ocean's 13 isn't a very good title to judge hi-def on (didn't receive very high marks for picture quality). Try something like Cars, Casino Royale or one of the Pirates of Caribbean movies to see if they look more like what you were expecting.

The more 3D'ish picture seems to be related to the 120hz LCDs. I'm not sure why that is but several have mentioned how 3D'ish things look on those TVs.

3Dish is exactly what I am trying to describe! So Ocean's is just a bad picture, cause in one scene Pacino's face is a mess of red pixels. I have Ratatouille and that was simply amazing. It did have a little tiny bit of grain but I am guessing that is because of my sharpness being too high.

Oh man i'm having the same problem, why should i turn down the sharpness if this tv should be sharp? My friend bought the new version of our tv and his blu-ray movies look amazing, no matter what he's watching. We were watching the 3rd resident evil and it looked awesome and then i went back to my house and it looked like crap. I'm really tempted to just buy a new tv because if i have to turn the sharpness down then it just wont look that good. Don't know what else to do.

Okay you are about to get inundated with comments ranging from the very technical, to the condescending. I'll give you the short answer.

Sharpness, is an artificial adjustment. It ADDS information to the picture, it doesn't remove any. Reducing the sharpness will help reveal what is actually being produced by the Blu-ray.

Sharpness was designed for the old analog TV's that needed an artificial enhancement to look clearer. HDTV and Blu-ray need no such "enhancement". The sharpness control is there for analog signals, but is like a sixth toe, or your appendix for High Def.

What I don't understand is why does the blu-ray movies look great on his tv regardless of settings? He hasn't messed with any settings at all and it looks amazing. With my tv I can't get rid of the grain no matter what I do. I turned down the sharpness all the way and it still is grainy. I think its just the tv, out of date even though its a little over a year old. Blu-ray came out really after this tv so maybe they just weren't meant to be.

1.) What TV do you have?

2.) What do you have your Blu-ray player hooked up with? ( ie. yellow, white, red cables?)

3.) What movie are you using to judge by?

I have an LN-S3251D with the Sony BDP-S300 using a Monster HDMI cable. Not only does the blu-ray's look bad but so does my cable. It doesn't matter what blu-ray movie I use, they all look bad. Maybe I'm very picky but I've read other reviews about this grain problem.

Okay then,

The Samsungs are notorious for having the contrast set WAY too high, and over saturation of the colors straight out of the box.

A calibration DVD should solve your problem right away. The Sammy also has a bunch of other artificial picture enhancements that you should be able to turn off. Turn off processing like Jpeg mode, and any other Noise Reduction settings (NR).

You don't want the TV creating noise in your pure Blu-ray picture. The other NR settings will introduce more problems then they will solve.

But seriously, get a calibration DVD.
