Could you imagine a 4K remaster of 2001? That would be sweet!

Since a 4K scan of A Clockwork Orange already exists maybe Warner has remastered other Kubrik films too but has kept silent. It will be interesting to see what they release once 4K BD comes out.

No. The old DVDs were all 4:3 or letterboxed within a 4:3 frame (except 2001). The scans the blu-rays use were created for the 2007 Kubrick boxed set and individual 2-disc DVD special editions. The blu-rays were also released concurrently in 2007. So they were new masters, not old.

It deserves an 8K scan since it's a 65mm film.

This has even eating at the back of my mind. I recently bought the standard keep case bluray with the 2007 cover. It's got the annoying Eco-gaps in the plastic. What bothers me, is I can't find anywhere online for the lie of me that shows what the disc should look like... I am wondering if I got sent the old Blu-ray Disc in the newer case?

I am paranoid because when I watched the film I kept thinking to myself, is this what the bluray is supposed to look like? I am not sure how amazing the PQ should be.

I've seen picture of the digibook bluray & it shows the artwork from the cover on the disc. My disc is plain silver with the title screen font.
Can someone please point out anywhere that shows what the proper 2007 Blu-ray Disc looks like vs the 2006 Blu-ray Disc? Perhaps a number along the edge anything?

Check the extras. The old disc only had a trailer, while the 2007 and later ones had much more.

Unfortunately, I think WB has gotten rather lazy with the disc art. I bought a new copy of the Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes a few months back and the disc was gold with the title printed on it (the original release had disc art). So it seems they've abandoned disc art for later pressings.

Yep, I've noticed that as well, but it's Paramount since they are the ones handing their re-releases over to Warner in the first place. Paramount is about the worst BD studio IMO between this and their lazy practices with Olive.

strange. I suppose it cuts costs down some, especially once they've made their initial sales. I don't mind so much the lack of disc art as long as I have the good bluray transfer.
Thank you for the info!

Wish WB would release a proper 1.66 Barry Lyndon, I've never seen the film. I understand the 1.78 isn't far off from Kubrick's noted allowance of 1.75. Just frustrating that it would be allowed to cut the image unnecessarily when it was so immaculately composed for 1.66. Why lose picture just to full a screen. Adding slight bits I can tolerate. Why would you want to crop anything out. Majority of Kubrick films are presented in 1.66. Why not arguably his most painstakingly visually crafted films.

Can anybody post a picture for me of the Blu-ray disc that came inside the digibook? I fear the seller may have given me the old disc inside of my copy becuase the art is the same as the cover, while on other stock photos it shows the art is different.

EDIT: It looks like it's the same disc as the remaster which was re-issued in the digibook, so i'm actually fine. Phew.

There are actually three possible disc arts you can get when you buy that digibook:

1 - The original exclusively made for the digibook, which they stopped pressing pretty quickly and is the rarest one:

2 - The one they used for their pre-digibook release, which matches the cover art and seems to be the one you have:

3 - The budget, minimalist one that Warner have turned to in order to reduce all production costs:

Furthermore, I've discovered that the disc quality can be extremely poor for the bonus Boxes DVD. The print quality of the front of the first release I bought was extremely poor, had a rough surface and looked to be printed in 256 color mode, like on a very old color printer. I've taken a pic of it:

But what's even worse is that the bottom side of the poor quality disc on the left looked like this:

Just looks like a matter of a time before it becomes unplayable. So yeah, there are all kinds of scenarios when you buy this digibook. I tracked one down with the original disc art on eBay for cheap, which also had the better bonus DVD quality. The digibook itself was beat up, but my original digibook was mint, so I just put the better discs in the mint digibook.

Huh, I had no idea that there were this many variations - looks like I got the one from the pre-digibook release.

Thanks for all the help!

Warner Japan has released a disc with a new encode of the film yesterday. This is one release in a series of Blu-rays with added Japanese dubbed audio tracks, and usually, the video encodes are identical to what WB released previously, but the specs said Full Metal Jacket had AVC video (and DTS-HD MA audio) on a BD-50, so, as I didn't own another edition on Blu-ray, I ordered it out of curiosity.

Lo and behold, this is indeed a new (the files on the disc are dated September 2017), high-bitrate AVC encode on a BD-50. For some reason, the audio commentary and video extras have been dropped, which is very odd, since both were available and apparently subtitled on the previous Japanese editions. In their place is a Region 2/4 NTSC DVD of Stanley Kubrick's Boxes, which has Japanese and Portuguese subtitles only.

As I said, I don't own another edition so I cannot make any comparisons, but I did just watch this one. My guess is it's the same master as the DE, but possibly with better compression.

Bloody hell, look at that average bitrate. The tech doing this for Warners must've felt quite dizzy, seeing it go that high.

Is Warner going all Superbit in Japan with their releases?

Warner Japan's Blu-rays for Japan (e.g. when they license an independent film) almost always have massive video bitrates:

As I'm sure their releases of Japanese films do, too. The standard lower bitrates are always courtesy of Warner Bros. in the US.

Too soon to tell. The previous release in the series was Blade Runner, which was included with Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray editions, and featured a Blu-ray with the Dolby Atmos mix, but the identical video encode on a BD-25. Amadeus has the same specs as the existing BD, but I didn't mind that, because it includes the theatrical cut on a single-sided NTSC DVD:

The site for the Japanese dub series is here, and all of the other releases are specified to be identical (in terms of codecs and disc size) to the existing standard WB discs.
