Default PS3 to DVD Player with 5.1 Channels

Guys, I'm planning to connect the audio output of my PS3 to our DVD players which has an audio input and it's 5.1 channels. But I'm not going to use optical output because it's not available on that DVD player. What's available is just the normal red and white input. In my PS3 settings, does AV Multi Out Audio Output supports 5.1 channels when I connect it to our DVD player? Or 5.1 channels will only work using Optical?

dvd player? do you mean a dvd recorder. a player has no inputs. and yes the PS3 red and white will do 5.1 in to a recorder on my panasonic it does.

But about the PS3, will it automatically set to 5.1 even though it's just in AV Multi-Out? not the Optical one..

The red and white are two channel, no matter how hard you try you will not get more than two channels. Optical will give you lossy 5.1 and HDMI will give you lossless. If you are hooking your PS3 up to a DVD player that is also a HTIB and it doesn't have optical inputs, you will not get 5.1 from the PS3

yes the AV Multi-out can only go up to 5.1 no higher. but best to go in to the audio setting and let the PS3 pick the output setting it wants. good luck

I'm confused. mustang says it will but PBJ says it will not. Who's the correct one?

when using analog, each cable is a discrete channel.

If you are only using two (which the PS3 only has two)...Red and White, you are only getting two channels.

Some receivers can matrix this two channel into simulated 5.1, but it is not true 5.1.

But to answer the question, NO you cannot get 5.1 analog from a PS3.
