Default No sound

bought a blu-ray player and connected through a new A/V receiver, then to my tv. The video comes though the HDMI but no sound?? anyways here is my set up,

Sony wega 42" LCD
Sony blu-ray BDP-S350
Sony A/V receiver STR-DG720

now my wega is 5ish years old and has no HDMI input so i went with a HDMI to DVI cord. I know most of you think well theres your problem, but that cord goes from my AV receiver to the tv so i don't need the audio to carry through it. I have a HDMI cord going from the blu-ray to the AV and the video comes through the tv perfectly but i've spent hours trying to adjust the audio settings and make the sound work... is there anybody who knows what my problem is?!

thank you

could be you need to set up the audio out from either your player or set the hdmi input to a function button like the 'aux' button. on my receiver there is also a setting to turn off the audio to prevent the audio to go through the hdmi out of the receiver so that it can output through the surround speakers.

your player decodes tru hd and can send pcm. maybe your receier can handle pcm audio. at least you can get hd audio for most discs. with dts hd youll get the core dts 5.1

just saw the main page at sony style for your receiver. your receiver will output pcm. if you want another option is to exchange the player for one that will decode all the codecs like a ps3 (one of the cheapest options.) if you dont want to upgrade your receiver

they say passthrough:

http://reviews.cnet.com/av-receivers...-32868568.html

edit... never mind I was looking at the 520 not the 720 model.. don't know why they listed 2 diffrent models on the same page.

So spares do you get ANY audio from the HDMI port???? if so just change the setting on the BD player to PCM.

look a little lower bro. it states it can handle up to eight channels of pcm audio it will pass through the 1080 video with no conversion and thats talking about a lower model the 520

got a new receiver, still same issue, this one came with a blu-ray in the package so im certain it should play the audio, is there any chance the HDMI cord i have is only meant to carry video?

(simple minds avoid the next part, its confusing)

other than that the only thing i can figure is that since my video output from the receiver to the tv is HDMI-DVI then its blocking the audio signal from reaching the receiver in the first place. and remember i explained im not trying to get audio to the tv so i dont think this should affect it

No, HDMI carries both audio and video. (could just be a defective cable, but not likely)

This would not affect audio into the receiver.

In your receiver settings, under Audio Out...set it to AMP (not AMP+TV)

Does this have any affect?

it all makes sense, all things are connected, receiver settings are to amp... what a mystery. have 2 receivers here and 2 blu-ray players and no sound son either.

can you walk us through your audio selection process in the bluray player?

...pretend (or actually start over) and give us a step by step.

It simply has to be a missed setting, because two players and two receivers do not fail very often for the same person! the odds are against that theory.

ok here's my audio settings for the BD player, the first 3 were explained in the operating instructions and are marked by an asterisk (*).

Audio Output Priority----------HDMI*

Audio (HDMI)------------------Auto*

BD Audio Setting--------------Direct*

Audio ATT----------------------Off

Dolby Digital-------------------Downmix PCM

DTS----------------------------Downmix PCM

48kHz/96kHz PCM------------48kHz/16bit

Audio DRC---------------------Auto

Downmix-----------------------Dolby Surround

The receiver is getting the video and relaying it to the tv perfectly, also i can get my audio from all other inputs to work through it (Cable, AM/FM)

made some suggestions in bold, although this may not solve your current problem.

But these settings are correct for your situation.

So next, it must be a setting in the receiver.

can you list the receiver selection process? (and as a last resort, it might very well be the HDMI cable you have is bad, in which case try using a different one)

I actually just read this in the receiver user manual (pg.35):

Quote:
Before using the receiver for the first time. Initialize the receiver by performing the following procedure. This procedure can also
be used to return settings you have made to their factory defaults.
Be sure to use the buttons on the receiver for this operation.

1. Press POWER to turn off the receiver.

2. While holding down TONE MODE and 2CH/A.DIRECT, press POWER to turn on the receiver.

3. Release the TONE MODE and 2CH/A.DIRECT after a few seconds. After "CLEARING" appears on the display for a while, "CLEARED !" appears, All the settings you have changed or adjusted are reset to the initial settings.
give this a shot!

ok, made those changes, still nothing for sound, have 2 HDMI cords, (same company though) and both have same result. So i know its not a damaged cord, well itd be pretty lucky/unlucky if they both were damaged. For the receiver settings here they are as i go into the amp menu, there are alot of options here and i can list them all but i will leave out the ones i think are irrelevant and just type (speaker) beside them... just to make things easy because some of the options are for adjusting the levels of the speakers etc.

1 - Levels (speaker)

2 - Tone (speaker)

3 - SUR (speaker)

4 - Tuner (this is for FM/AM radio tuning etc.)

5 - Audio
-> DEC. PRI ---- Auto
->Dual-----------M
->A/V Sync------0
->In Mode (this is dimmed, and when i try to change it says NOT IN USE)

6 - Video (Audio for HDMI) ------- Amp

7 - System (speaker)

8 - Auto Cal. (speaker)

if there is anything i left out that is relevant let me know. BTW all this is help greatly appreciated, you can imagine the frustration that 8 hours of working on this, and $1100+ spent in that time frame has brought.
