Default denon avr688 do hd audio with ps3?
so at work we got an open box avr688 for $180. will this do hd audio with a ps3? or should i just pay the extra $40 and get the sony 720?

No, it won't. HDMI is passthrough only, and it doesn't decode to boot. Get the Sony or another receiver.
