Default Newbie blu-ray problem

Hi everyone, new member and blu-ray owner here. We just got a Memorex MVBD2511 from Wal-Mart for $148 a few weeks ago. It is connected via a HDMI to a 51" Hitatchi 1080i projection HDTV. I bought four of Wal-Mart's $10 blu-rays- Terminator 2, Saw 1 and 2, and Stargate. They all play fine-menus load quickly and are responsive-no picture or audio problems. The problem I have is with Hancock and The Dark Knight. Those movies will play for about 10 to 30 minutes then suddenly the screen goes snowy (like tuning in to a channel you don't get on a really old TV) and the sound goes out, too. The disruption lasts for 5 to 30 seconds, then the picture and sound come back on. If I unplug and re-plug the HDMI, it comes back on,too. At first we were using a $15 Walmart HDMI, but I just switched to a $50 Rocketfish cable that is rated for 10.2GB/s and 120Hz. Still having the same problem. The other thing I noticed was the underside of the discs. On the four cheapies I got at walmart, they look like a shiny regular DVD or CD looks. But, on Hancock and the Dark Knight, the underside is shiny and has a wavy rainbow pattern-kind of like an oil/gas spill. Any ideas? My next step is to get a set of Component cables and see if that makes a difference over the HDMI.
If someone could check the undersides of their copies of Hancock and Dark Knight, I would appreciate it . My mother-in-law bought them for us for Christmas from an online store. Thanks for your help!

Hey!!!! Welcome to the site!!!! I think this link might help you.

http://www.memorex.com/support/suppo...d=50719&cid=55

Sounds like a firmware problem to me so this will help. Just follow the instructions and you'll be good to go in no time.

Also this quoted from rdodolak

Quote:
Most firmware has been provided as an .iso file which needs to be burned to the disc as an image vs. a data disc. However, it seems Memorex simply zipped the contents of the disc and provided that as a download. That could be a potential problem depending on how the player recognizes the disc.

I see that they provided two firmware releases; one on 12/15 and another on 12/24. Which one did you try? What does the contents of the burned CD-R show?

It appears the firmware file structure is vary similar to the firmware contents for the Olevia Blu-ray player. A number of those users are also experiencing issues with getting that player to recognize the firmware disc.

Blu-ray Disc Player MVBD2510

EDIT: Other notes of caution per Memorex instructions:

Unzip the firmware and burn the unzip files (make sure only the files are being burned and not a parent folder) on a blank CD-R disc.
Warning: do not burn the unzip files on a blank CD+R /CD-RW/ CD+RW disc.

Quote:
Q: What does the firmware dated December 24th do?

A: This firmware improved disc compatibility. Most of the latest releases from Fox can be played. We tested it with latest Fox released movie "Horton Hears a Who", which wasn't played in previous firmware but played in this version.
We also tested the below BD discs with this firmware, all can be played properly.

"The Dark Knight"(Warner Bros.)
"Transformers"(Paramount)
"Spiderman 3"(Columbia)
"21"(Columbia)
"Resident Evil: Extinction"(Sony)
"The Legend of Zorro"(Columbia)

We expect another firmware update to be available the week of January 5th.

That firmware if for the 2510. I have the 2511. I don't want to risk messing up the player by flashing it with the wrong firmware.

Thanks! I checked the Memorex site, and they haven't released any firmware for the 2511 yet.

Yeah, I just saw that myself. I did see a note about another firmware release on January 5th on the site, hopefully that will be for the 2511.

How about the other issue I mentioned about the underside of the discs? Ever seen what I described? Or is that just normal for some Blu's?

Oh yeah, that's normal. Most of mine have that rainbow ripple effect.

I looked at number of my discs and they are all like mirrors. I don't recall any having a rainbow effect but that doesn't mean they don't once in awhile.

Blu-ray discs are almost transparent. You should be able to see the artwork for the clear side .

I have this player, a 50px80u and a $5 hdmi 1.3 cable from supermediastore. Dark Knight plays fine til the end and on the extras, but only if you have had the player shut off beforehand. Otherwise it just loads and loads.

All of these work without a problem:

Wall E
V for vendetta
terminator
first blood
rambo 2
Spiderman 3
Indy IV
Shining
Godfather trilogy
For your eyes only
Saw 2

Jingle all the way gives me a red firmware update needed screen. I believe I tried it when the player was off and also on beforehand. I haven't tried any other Blus then those mentioned above.

Soon I will have:

Rob zombie's Halloween
Waiting
Bond Vol 1 and 2
kill bill 1 and 2
Nightmare on Elm St
Rocky Balboa
Rush Hour 3

maybe get to try Home alone and Black Christmas too.

Default Update

Ok, here's an update: I returned the $50 Rocketfish HDMI to Bestbuy and bought a set of $20 Philips component video cables from Wal-Mart. I hooked the player up with those cables and a pair of red/white stereo cables. I was able to watch the entire Dark Knight with out the problem described in my first post. Haven't tried Hancock yet. I read the manual for the TV, and it's Max resolution is 1080i, so there was no point using the HDMI anyway.
