Default Any ideas on why Dolby Vision can't be imbedded now in these new UHD BD players

LG pulled theirs and isn't looking to update their FW anytime soon. At CES three companies, SONY, PANASONIC and PHILIPS announced new BD players which will be DV compatible with FW this summer or later. Why is this the case? Does anyone have any clue as to why? Something odd seems to be going on behind the scenes

For one, they have to be certified along with the software before they can get it I think.

LG has been using their own designed with Dolby custom TV chip since 2016, so they just keep rolling along. I wonder if the devices with software implementation arent some other issue. Sony put DV on their website for the displays in Sept, and we are finally getting it in late Jan...

Sounds to me like the whole process is problematic, and now Dolby just owned up to the raised black levels on some movies as their fault with HDMI devices, and a fix is in the works.

Licencing Dolby Vision costs money where as HDR10 and 10+ are free and open. The few that are supporting it aren't doing so as a top priority. I honestly think HDR10+ is where the future is at.

^ HDR10+ is not totally free, there is a annual administration fee to the manufacturer see http://www.hdr10plus.org/press-release/

Isn't HDR10+ being added to some players via firmware update as well? Pretty much exactly what's being done with Dolby Vision. Samsung is adding HDR10+ to its 2017 players with a firmware update. Do the Panasonic players support HDR10+ out of the box, or will they need a firmware update?

HDR10+ might be cheaper, but isn't totally free either. It doesn't require any royalty fees, but there is an administrative fee that has to be paid.

So the 2016 model K8500 not getting the update? That really sucks for all of us who took the plunge to get that first model when it came out. 499.00

Samsung already lost some market share, they need you to buy new players.

I'm willing to bet many people would rather wait and get a fully functional device rather than one with the promise of something "later". what if "later" never comes, then what? you won't get money back from the company. sometimes that date keeps on moving.

if these things are DV capable, they should get all that taken care of before it comes to market. this way, you wouldn't have social media beating your door down about not yet having DV or passing the promised time frame for getting said update.

how many times has 1'st half gone to 3rd quarter gone to end of year gone to next year gone to hearing nothing about it anymore.

this of course is just my opinion.

Makes we wonder if any TV's are likely to get HDR10+ updates via firmware or is that even possible? I know that some tvs are getting DV firmware updates (SONY), but assume they need a good enough processor in them to even be possible

Meh, if the product is ready to go with improvements, and all it is waiting on is DV to certify or approve or WTF ever they are doing, let it loose. You don't hold up an entire line because a company in the mix doesn't have their shit together. And yes, I think DV owns more of this than the manufacturer.

The hold up per John Archer is that the displays (DV Display Management) need their FW updated to correct the raised black issues observed:

Quote:
This explains, too, why I and other 4K Blu-ray fans have also sometimes seen the same sort of raised black level issues when watching Dolby Vision 4K Blu-ray titles.

Dolby didn’t go into detail about exactly what the issue was, but the great news is that the solution they’ve put together - which has to be applied to displays, not Dolby Vision source devices - has already been made available to the TV manufacturers who need it.
