Default Why are the UHD Blu-ray menus so crappy ?

I remember the days when a DVD menu was a glorious animation, something to behold. Now every menu is reduced to a picture.... why ?

Just be glad we don't have to skip 7 trailers before we even get to the menu on most 4K releases.

Why, is the forum approaching its maximum number of threads?

It's a reasonable question. I just got my first UHDs recently in the Nolan Collection, and all start out with some video clips followed by a plain title screen and it did seem odd. If that's the way they all are now, I'm with OP in wondering why that would be.

It doesn't particularly bother me, and I'm not about to complain, but it's a curiosity.

Everything about package media these days is cutting costs. So the first and obvious thing to go is fancy meaningless menus that add nothing to the film. Second should be slipcovers and extra garbage that drives up prices (or, more accurately, helps keep prices where they are). It's not really a curious thing at all, just basic business.

Wait, no trailers *and* simple menus that just load right up?

Maybe dropping a few grand on a new display and a new player and a new AVR is a better idea than I thought

The Sony menus are shite though. Clunky, slow and no practical pop-up menu of note, it's a good job Sony are such wizards at creating gorgeous 4K images otherwise those steam-driven menus would really get on my thrupenny bits. Sony wanna party like it's 1999, literally.

UHD BDs don't sell as much as DVDs did. Therefore, less money/time to spend on packaging/menus/extras.

Special section for cast and crew. Who cares.

I like that Sony ones on UHD look like unfolding vinyl albums. It would be more fitting if bonus features were on the disc, but that's a double edged sword.

Maybe studios feel like it's more of a premium format for grown-ups and the costs of producing a 4K menu animation would be wasted on people who just want to watch the dang movie already.

Dunkirk's menu is sleek with a clip playing. I suppose it depends on the distributor/studio.

I don't buy movies for the menu. I have never stopped and said "wow what a nice looking menu".

I agree, menus can only be annoying. I find the looping menus to be much more obnoxious than having just a static image when I'm snoozing on the couch or off in the other room having long pooping breaks.

The X-files BDs are the worst at that.

That's partly what I mean, that stuff is what used to pass as 'special features' 20 years ago, it's so strange that Sony's menus have regressed so much.

Heh, I don't mind a nice double gatefold but when I've gotta unfold something five or six times to get to where I want then it gets ****ing tedious no matter how pretty it might look.

It's not really what it looks like for me, I just want the kind of functionality that has become standard on HD media for the past decade or so.

Yeah, they could do the same thing with a better flow and minimal root menus.
