I really think it's funny that people would continue buying DVDs of titles they will want on Blu-ray eventually (especially people who ALREADY own BD players). No, you're not saving money by buying a single disc DVD copy of The Dark Knight, because that just means 17 bucks wasted on nothing when you finally get around to buying the Blu-ray (that won't be breaking even unless you can buy TDK on BD later on for the price of the current difference between the cheap DVD and the BD). The only way you WOULDN'T save money in the long run by switching to Blu-ray is if you buy like less than 5 movies per year and will not be getting Blu-ray for a few years. |

My parents just got a new HDTV today (720p. Damn it) so I should see plenty of BD's coming to our house soon enough. Its brilliant seeing that for once, someone is behind blu.

He'll soon see the light. The difference is small, about the same as an upconverted dvd to blu, so that's why most people don't notice it. The audio though, shouldn't compare.

These articles need to stop using the damn $39.99 MSRPs, even the store chains don't charge MSRP. Most I've seen for a movie at BB, for example, is ~$35. And people should know that online is ~$30 and under. |

As economy still affects a lot of people, people still want to get the best of their money can buy. Walmart are selling their DVDs for as low as $5.00. To me, it's a surplus they can't sell.
Maybe they need to put the advertisement on the entrance instead of putting them in the corner. Blu-ray disc association should not relax advertising Blu-ray as a lot of people still not onboard with this format. |

The article is good for blu support
![]() The only thing I disagree with is his questioning on why old movies cost twice as much as dvd. Sure, on the surface it doesn't make much sense, the movie's old and now cheaply and widely available, but once you realize the entire movie is restored frame by frame for BD, which can take hundreds of hours of work, you understand why it costs as much as a new movie, which doesn't need to go through restoration. Hopefully, as momentum picks up, so will volume for old movie restorations, which will hopefully drive down costs, keeping the cost of a blu version of an old movie closer to its current cost on dvd. In fact, it doesn't even compare favorably. I'd say that upscaled DVD compares more favorably, just because audio isn't limited as heavily and you actually get the extras like commentary and deleted scenes. Quote:
Only on catalog titles does the price gap become enormous and that's only because of the age of the previous DVD release. Either way, the old catalog titles that you might already own on DVD are identified in the article as ones you probably shouldn't bother with on BD, at least as long as the price is absurd. Anyway, this is clearly directed at people who buy movies. If you can't afford to buy movies, I'd say you shouldn't even be screwing around with DVD... save your cash for things like food and bills if you're that hard for cash. Quote:
No... the reason catalog titles cost so much more than their DVD counterpart is because it's expected. The market is not yet saturated with the title in the format, so they charge the upper end that they can at first, then drop it down after a while. If the film continues to sell well at a higher price, it'll remain there, if it does not, it will drop, until it hits the area of like 10~15 bucks. But this takes time... they're not going to drop Dumb and Dumber down to 15 bucks the week after it's newly released in the format, they need to maximize profit by maintaining price until everyone who will buy it at the higher price has had a chance to. |
