Default PS3 DTS-HDMA Sound Problem

Hello,

I have been watching Band of Brothers and have noticed that there is a substantial amount of distortion in the audio. Music, Planes flying by, bombs, etc. Thinking that it was my speakers, I stuck my John Mayer Blu-ray in, cranked the volume past where I was watching Band of Brothers and no distortion or crackling at all. That Blu-ray is DolbyTrue HD. Then this morning, I was listening to the Rush: Snakes and Arrows Blu-ray and noticed that same distortion. I have my internal volume level set at 0. Has anyone else experienced this?

When the movie is playing back, press the triangle button on the PS3 controller and check your "volume" setting on that PS3 onscreen menu. I know that I have had major distortion problems like this with the TrueHD track on '300' when I had that volume setting at it's highest. Since I've turned it down to +2 it seems to be much better.

Yeah, but the problem is I have my Volume is set at 0. Maybe I'll set it down to the minuses and see if that has any effect.

Really, it should be set at 0. That is the original volume that the movie was mixed at. I find that when you lower it or raise it you change more than just the volume.

Has this just started happening w/ DTS-MA titles, or are these the first ones you've used?

Also, have you recently upgraded any of your equipment?

I have only noticed it with those DTS-MA titles so far. I might need to go through some other ones and check them out. All of my equipment is the same as in my signature and none of it is new.

Do you hear it primarily from the center? Is it a sort of faint popping/crackling that happens every few seconds?

Are your speakers able to handle the frequency? You can manually set the frequency through the sound menu on the ps3 XMB.

Mainly the crackling is coming from the center, but I also hear it a little bit in the fronts. I just played it on my dads PS3 setup with a 4308 denon receiver hooked up to B&W 600 series towers with a matching center and I noticed it in there as well. I also tried bitstreaming the audio and getting the core DTS track and I noticed the crackling on there as well. Any ideas?

Is it like I described it? A faint crackle-crackle-crackle or pop-pop-pop? Especially noticeable during the intro music?

During the intro music, it is extremely noticeable. I honestly think it is just the recording because I just watched two entire episodes (which were excellent by the way) and only noticed the crackle-crackle pop in the intro and outro music. Wierd.

Aha! I had the exact same issue then with mine on my PS3 to my Marantz receiver.

Not anymore with my BD35 and Pioneer receiver though.

The one thing that's the same between the both of us then was the PS3...its either a setting there or a fault outright of the ps3.

I have my volume set at 0, and it is fine on mine. If I have it at anything - I have to crank my receiver, anything + and there is major distortion in my speakers, 0 is the best place to have the internal volume of the PS3.

So now I have to ask this question. Is it worth the money to upgrade to the panny 35 or sony bdp-s350? Will I notice any difference in sound quality having my receiver doing the decoding via bitstream?

Bitstream and LPCM does the samething, some people say they hear a difference, some people dont. both the panny and sony are good players, did you try everything to fix that problem with the ps3 though? i never had that problem before with mine.

See, that's the thing, BAC - the both of us have had the same issue, but others have not - maybe its a firmware thing or just bad discs or some setting we have on in our players/receivers...strange.

Well...we got both of our discs in Florida...maybe a bad batch was distributed here....hmmm...did you get it at Costco? I did...

I remember when you went through that JJ, I was upset with Marantz for a while - it seems as if it may be an isolated PS3 issue. OP, if you can - get a 55 or 350 (with a return policy that you like) see if that works. That issue was a big mystery!!!!
