Watching my first Blu-ray - Blu-ray Forum

This is probably the wrong forum but I wasnt sure where else to put it. It's hard to describe what I'm seeing. Maybe its supposed to be that way. I'm watching Goodfellas and the movements are wierd. Kind of like its on a slight fast forward. I'm watching on a PS3 so I just want to make sure my settings are all correct.

does this happen with regular dvds too? if so, sounds almost like ghosting. it's likely not with your PS3 but with your TV. If you have any "special features" in the Menu settings of your TV you should disable them (i.e. Noise Reduction, True Motion Enhancement, stuff like that). See what happens and report back!

What type of display are you using....

Its a 40in Samsung. 1080p, 120hz

i think ive heard some people say the 120hz could cause that?

I've seen 120hz displays at BB and CC. Everything looks too real when objects move. Thats why I didn't want a 120 hz tv.

Hey thanks to both of you. There is something called "auto motion plus 120hz" I turned that off and now it seems fine.

I remember that being my first impression when the early HDTVs were coming out. The video displayed seemed to be going "too fast".

yes..do not have any motion enhancements on when watching a movie, its more for live tv

Too each his own i guess... some movies look fine with the motion enhancers on and others don't... its all up to you personally. hope your enjoying your blu!!!

There was a TV at Best Buy that was doing something like this. Did it seam like it was around 1.4 or so times faster? To the point where the audio doesn't sound too distorted, but you can jsut tell that the video is moving to fast?

You're confusing 120Hz with anti-judder, which are two entirely different things. Anti-judder comes with most or all of the 120Hz TVs, but you can turn it off. The TVs at BB and CC have anti-judder on, and this is what makes the movies look weird, NOT the fact that they are 120Hz. I have a 120Hz TV with anti-judder off, and my BD player is set to 24p. It's perfect, and looks exactly the way it's supposed to.

120Hz TVs were created because movies are 24 frames/sec, and NTSC TV is 30 frames/sec. 120 is a common multiple of these numbers, so the TV can display both framerates without doing weird pulldown ratios and such.

Turn AMD off, on your tv's display options.

EDIt: Maybe it's AMP, I'm not sure.

This.

120 is awesome for film sourced and encoded at 24fps (which the majority are). Its all the other features that they tack to it, like in Samsung's case with the AMd/S that make it look silly. Turn it off and watch it 24fps and it will look outstanding.

I honestly did cry when I put in the first blu

3 months later and a lot of blu's later..I am still crying
