Broken down by year: 2600 by default for me

NES by default (though I played some of my friends Master System, NES was hands down king)

SNES was King bus Genesis was amazing as well. Closet match for generational title.

N64 versus PS1, tough one though I think I spent more time on the n64.

PS2, hands down king by far.. DC and Xbox still had their moments.

PS3, hands down best console ever, easily the best software lign up this gen. 360 has some exclusives worth playing as does the Wii.

I've owned:

Atari 2600
TurboGrafx (PC engine actually
Nintendo
Super Nintendo
Nintendo 64
Gamecube
Wii
Sega Genesis
Sega Saturn
Sega Dreamcast
Playstation 1
Playstation 2

I've owned the following:

-- Pong
-- Magnavox Odyssey²
-- Atari 2600
-- Nintendo
-- Super Nintendo
-- Nintendo 64
-- Sega Master System
-- Sega Genesis
-- Playstation 2
-- Playstation 3
-- Microsoft XBOX 360

I'd say I had more fun on the Atari 2600 & NES than any other system. I wanted a ColecoVision in the worst way, and would try to play it every time we went to Sears. If I had to pick a favorite out of all the above, it would be the 2600 as highlighted by nostalgia.

Even though it's a gaming console question, I want to throw in that I had a Tandy 1000 which I used for games and I had the most fun with that overall than any of the above. Staying up entire weekends playing Kings Quest, Space Quest, Gabriel Knight, Zork, Below the Root, Police Quest, and Thexder were some of the best times I've ever had playing games.

How in the world could this be anything other than the PS3. Yeah when I was 12 it was Atari and later SNES, but right now in 2009 it has to be the PS3. If they would have had all this when I was kid I would have never made it through school.

I probably spent the most hours playing NES, but I voted for SNES since it had some of my favorite games of all-time: Chrono Trigger, Secret Of Mana, FFIV & FFVI. My console list was:

Atari
NES
SNES
N64
PS1
PS2
PS3

SNES because I grew up with it and had the most fun with it. Nothing has ever recaptured those feelings. The Wii came close but you think differently when you get older.

A system is mostly defined by the games on it. There are some massive classics on the NES and many other systems that define what is out today.

I had more fun playing The Legend of Zelda and trying to beat the first story in as few lives as possible then I ever did playing any game on the PS3.

Same here.

See the thing about Nintendo systems and their games - you just play it. Controls are pretty much the same across the board. There really is no goal but to have fun.

Today, you have all these war games that are so complex, it's no fun playing them.

SNES

alway thought when games came out on both SNES and the Genesis that the graphics were better on the SNES.

Exactly! Fun was the most important factor back then, not secondary to how many pixels you can push.

I will never go back and play Metal Gear Solid but you can rest assured I will play Super Mario Brothers again.

I wish they had some simple side scrollers around these days.

You are correct. I play SM, SMB 3 all the time. Love it. They did make a new MegaMan, although it seems harder than the originals. They gave it the classic old look and play.

Wario Land - Shake It is a good side scroller.

I honestly wish they would remake Super Mario or the entire SM series in glorious HD or just update it. Keep everything the same though. I would buy it in a HEART BEAT!

owned consoles...

Atari 2600
Texas Instruments TI-99 4A computer
NES
Super NES
Sega Genesis
Atari Jaguar
PS 1
PS 2
Xbox
PS3
Dreamcast
Gameboy
PSP

Honestly, I would have to say my favorite of all the consoles owned is the Dreamcast. I cannot remember owning a console that had so many quality titles come out in such a consentrated time frame. I remember coming home with the console on launch day with Sonic Adventure, NFL 2K, Soul Caliber, and Ready 2 Rumber Boxing. By FARRRRR the greatest launch line up of any console ever! Then shortly beyond that I had Resident Evil Code Veronica, Crazy Taxi, Jet Grind Radio, Virtual On, Sega Rally 2, Power Stone, Skies of Arcadia, Grandia 2, etc.

Atari 2600. I can't even remember how many games I had for it. I had a great time growing up, neighborhood friends had Intellivision, Colecovision, Vectrex and the Odyssey II. In the last couple of years I've lucked up on some deals for a lot of old systems and games, Just recently bought an Intellivision II and 50+ games for $25. Now I'm on the hunt for a Vectrex system.

Braid on XBL marketplace is an EXCELLENT side scroller with a few modern twists. It also pays major homage to Super Mario Bros without actually ripping it off. Two thumbs up on that one.

I too could play Goldeneye or Mario Kart or Rogue Squadron for hours but I don't think I've had as much fun as when I've played MGS4 or LBP with other people, locally of course. I think a lot of peoples argument is that just becuase graphics are better doesn't mean gameplay is. But to me, gameplay is as exciting as it's ever been.

I probably have more than 300, I need to take the time to count them.

Back in like 2000-2001, I was on vacation from work with nothing to do, and I decided I wanted a NES. I drove to every Gamestop in southeast Michigan and bought every game I wanted. Gamestop was phasing out the NES and all of the games were discounted deeply. Many games were $.50-$1, some of the more rare/popular games were as much as $5. And on top of that, during that week Gamestop had Buy 2 Get 1 Free on all used games. I did buy a few on eBay and at flea markets as well. There's still some I'd like to get.

D*mn man, good question! I cannot decide. I grew up gaming and have owned virtually every console so far. I have very fond memories with each one and don't think I could pick. I will say as far as sports games go that the Dreamcast NFL2k game blew me and my friends away in college as its graphics were way ahead at that time. But then the PS2 came out and I got NCAA football on it and it was soooo awesome. The leap from the previous years ps1 version to that next years ps2 version was absolutely staggering.
