Just announced onFacebook.
While the City Sleeps (1956) New 2018 1080p HD Remaster Run Time 99:00 Subtitles English SDH DTS HD-Master Audio 2.0 Mono - English ORIGINAL ASPECT RATIO - 2.0:1, 16x9 Letterbox B&W BD 50 Special Feature: Theatrical Trailer (HD) “Ask mother,” says the message scrawled in lipstick at a murder scene, written by an unidentified serial killer who preys on women. It’s a sensational story — if it bleeds, it leads — and a news conglomerate offers a big promotion to any high-level company exec who solves the case. So begins the wheeling, dealing and backstabbing of the competing media hotshots as they vie to unmask the so-called Lipstick Killer. Fritz Lang (The Big Heat), whose early career expressionist works would strongly influence the film-noir genre, directs this stylistically understated noir that features an abundance of starpower rare for the genre: Dana Andrews, Rhonda Fleming, George Sanders, Thomas Mitchell, Vincent Price, Ida Lupino and other notables. |

Wonder if there's any tie-in with this release and the fact that the film is prominently mentioned on the new Criterion of "Silence Of The Lambs?"

This is one of Lang's cheapest, bleakest films. Normally those are two of my favorite descriptors, but in this case the results are mixed, and the relentlessly sordid and cynical atmosphere becomes a bit of a drag. NYC (which we see very little of, other than a handful of exteriors of the low-rent dive The Blue Dell, where the film’s newspaper reporters go to drink and flirt) is presented as a dirty, dismal place populated by self-centered, unlikable people who are quick with a quip but slow with a helping hand. It's a movie stocked almost entirely with unlikable characters - an unmotivated lush (Andrews), oily opportunist (Saunders), smarmy careerist (Craig) conniving cuckold (Price), and a couple of on-the-make sexpots (Fleming and Lupino). The only 'decent' person is Andrews' virginal girlfriend, who is nonetheless (or perhaps inevitably!) the least interesting character.
I always wondered if William Lustig ever saw this film - as in Maniac, another movie about a serial killer with mommy issues stalking Gotham gals, the murderer's modus operandi is to push in the button lock on the side of a victim's door so that he can come back later and gain entry. |
