I just got my PS3 today and I got component cables for my machine because my reciever (that i use as a switch) doesn't have HDMI. The component cables is connected to the multi-out not from the HDMI port of the PS3. Anyhow, my tv supports 1080i but when I try and set my display settings to 1080i it does not let me, I can only get 720P. On my dvd player (which is also run through the receiver) I can get it to 1080i but how come I can't get my PS3 to do it? any suggestions or comments? I'm using the official component cable from Sony and I have firmware 1.90.
Do I have to get a "HDMI to Component" cable to get 1080i? Please help. thanks. |

my dvd player can put out a 1080i signal to the TV and when it does the tV flashes and in the upper left corner it says "Component 1 1080i". I currently have the PS3 at 720P, when I try and set it to 1080i my TV jumps to 480i looking all messed up with double vision and scan lines etc., weird huh?
Anyhow, my TV does not have HDMI but it does have DVI, the only problem with using DVI is my remote. I no longer use the TV remote since everything is comming from one source (my receiver) I just use my receiver remote to turn on the TV; so using an HDMI to DVI cable would mean adding a 3rd remote to my coffee table and an extra step when I want to switch to my PS3. I already do use an optical cable for the PS3 but for some odd reason 1080i gives me the messed up cloned screen when I set it. sadly if SUPERSIX14 is correct i'm screwed because my TV is a lower-end-off-brand plasma (Maxent 42" I bought it a while ago); it does claim to support 1080i though, my DVD player seems to prove that right. duhh... how could I have thought there were HDMI to component cables? sorry about that, i wasnt thinking. i guess one of my only choices is jumping onto monoprice and try out an HDMI to DVI cables. thanks every1 for your replies. love to hear any other ideas people have. Try the HDMI/DVI cable. Before I got my new Sony tv that's what I was using and it did the job for me. You can find a cable for like $20 on the internet if you look well enough, so that way you won't have to waste your money on a Monster cable.
As far as the remote issue goes, pick yourself up a Harmony remote made by Logitech, they are beyond awesome and work great. I recommend the 880 model. The only thing they don't work on is PS3 due to Bluetooth. If you never heard of these remotes do a little research and you'll discover how awesome they are. |

I may be incorrect, but I'm 99% sure I've seen TV's with one or two component inputs that handle 1080i, and the other one or two only supporting 480i/p, and MAYBE 720p . . . so maybe you have your PS3 plugged into an input that doesn't accept 1080i? That'd be my first guess.

My TV's Component inputs (2) are both capable of 1080i. definitly check your TV's manual to see if the Component input(s) are capable of 1080i. If you decide to try the DVI connection on your TV, buy a cable from Monoprice.com.....great quality for very little money. |

Did you verify your PS3 is set up to send 1080i signals? You have to tell it what your tv can handle. I don't think it will default to 1080i unless you tell it to. I could be horribly off base on this one but I don't think so.

It SHOULD come up with 1080i if the display it's sending signal to will accept it. Mine defaults to 1080p when doing the automatic setup.

I have a "JVC HRXVC14B" which is an upconverting DVD VCR combo. My flat panel doesn't have a tuner so I had to get a VCR combo to watch TV but yeah, the DVD player has HDMI-out but I don't use it since none of my machines have HDMI; I run component from the DVD player to my receiver (Yamaha RX-659) and then component from the receiver to the TV.
When I put in a standard DVD into my player and set it to upconvert to 1080i my flat panel response is as it should be, flashes, then displays "Component 1 1080i" in green TV letters in the upper left hand corner. I haven't a single clue on how or why the HDCP isn't blocking the HD signal. Either way though, if I can get 1080i from one source through the receiver then shouldn't I have the same compatibility with my PS3? it just doesn't make sense to me. So wait, on a side note; if all HD content is DRM'd with HDCP and can only be transmitted through HDMI or DVI, does that mean that if i chose to use component only (which keeps everything organized through the receiver) i could only play PS3 games through component and when i want to watch blu-ray movies i have to switch to a direct feed from the HDMI port? and seeing how I don't have any machines that have HDMI-in i would have to resolve in getting an HDMI to DVI cable and connecting it directly to the flat panel? i really don't want to have to spend another $100 on a logitech harmony remote. anyaways, thanks for the replies everyone, every one is a step closer. I believe the rational here is the Component is an analog signal while HDMI/DVI is digital and you can make many multiple copies without degradation. The analog signal degrades. So 1080i via Component is a reality. |

So I'm in the clear with component cables right? It still doesn't explain why my PS3 won't let me go to 1080i when my DVD player does.....
thanks for the posts every one! |
