Default Your opinion on DVD upscaling

Hey guys!

In your opinion, does the DVD upscaling on the PS3 make the DVD's look better than what they would have in a normal SD player with a SD screen? OR do DVD's still look the best in SD equipment? IF someone is a DVD collector is it really worth it for them to take the HD leap?

absolutely you should take the HD leap. in my opinion, DVD upscaling on the PS3 is alright, and the image does look better then on standard definition, but nothing beats a film in True HD 1080p. It is definitely worth the money, you will never want to go back to DVD again.

I can barely stand to watch films in SD anymore, the only ones I do is my boxed set TV shows, and my Star Wars films, since we all know Lucas will not put the films in HD for a while.

Yeah, I agree HD is definitely superior, my only problem is I also have TV DVD boxsets but they are all region 1 and my PS3 is european. Now I'm wondering if I shouldn't just replace my HDTV with a SDTV so that I can at least watch my DVD's. Either that or I need to rebuy everything on region 2, and frankly, that thought just keeps me up at night.

I think standard dvd upscaling is a myth.
Looks just the same to me ..... blurry & soft (compared to Blu rays, that is .... )

SD DVD looks good but not as good as blu-ray.I only really watch TV boxsets on my ps3. But that being said i find newer movies look good upscaled but older films look not as good.

totally agree, how is it possible to extrapolate an HD picture from an SD source?

I have a few DVD's that look really good upscaled, and there are others that looks worse, and some that I notice no difference in. So I guess it depends on the individual titles.

I totally agree. It really does depend on the title IMO. I have some movies that look pretty good upscaled. I have other movies that don't look one bit better. To someone who doesn't watch BD's, upscaling probably looks "amazing" but most of us here know better. It is worth it to take the leap to HD.

Agree upscaling results seem to vary-- don't think it depends on age of the movie. SD 'Gettysburg' upscaled (Sony BDP-S1/XBR2 46"/all HDMI) was quite disappointing, but 'Ten Commandments' and 'Ben Hur' were very impressive. Still, will re-buy when BD versions come out (may it be soon!).

P.S. - Anybody know why not all titles upscale the same?

Cool

DVDs are all made with different compression ratios so as to fit everything on the disk. The result will be that some movies with severe compressions artifacts will look awful when upscaled.

I played Fellowship of the Ring using a component DVD player at 480 then played it in my PS3 at 1080p upscaled onto my 1080p lcd tv. It looked better but still far behind a BD. Its hard for me to watch DVD anymore sometimes after being exposed to BD @ 1080!

I cant see a difference in PQ with upscaling, so i turned it off on my ps3 because it gets louder having to upscale since i don't see the diff, no point in having it on.

Actually good up-sampling technology can figure out what information should be there. As a professional in the photography world, I run into all kinds of us-sampling/up-scaling software that mimics this. Some work very well, others not so much.
For the size difference between SD and HD, it is not that drastic of a change and can be resampled fairly easily. This does NOT mean it will find more detail or extrapolate an HD image from an SD image.
It does mean that if you look at the image on an HD screen with a SD source, and compare it with a resampled source, it will look smoother, sharper, and better.
I believe that the PS3 does an excellent job of resampling images. I can see the "blurry" and "soft" effect people talk about, but it is minor and does not detract from the experience. If you compare this to a SD signal on the same size screen, the resampled is far superior.
Now a resampled image will never look as good as a pure HD image (keeping compression out of it), such as a Blu-ray disc, but it will look better than an SD image.
And since many DVD's support "Anamorphic" or "enhanced for 16:9", it will fill a widescreen HDTV and give you a full experience while a SD signal will have letterbox bars on the sides, top and bottom.
But as i said... nothing compares to the PQ of a Blu-ray.

a) the outcome heavily depends on the quality of the source (MPEG2 is a variable bitstream). the best resul i've gotten has been with Star Wars Episode III.
b) don't expect upscaled dvd's to look like as good as bd's.
