Default Blu-Ray Sales Expected To Triple In 2009 What Does This Mean Help Me

So if sales triple and given Blu-Rays current market share where looking at a healthy 30% of the home media market correct?

If that's the case by the end of 2010 Blu-Ray should over take DVD sales.

Or im i getting way over my head.

I assume they mean to project that unit sales of Blu-rays will triple in 2009. If dvd sales remain static in 2009 (a bad assumption probably), Blu-ray will be closer to 15%-20% of overall dvd sales. In 2008 Blu-ray sold approximately 5% of overall dvd sales.

Yeah well that's cause there's well over 60,000 titles on DVD against 1,100 Blu-Ray discs.

Im taking about new sales.

Blu will not overtake DVd unti late 2010 early 2011. More sales = more releases = lower BD movie prices.

I was in my local Best Buy the other day to pick up Friday Night Lights and noticed the space for Blu-rays had went from 16 feet to 24 feet.

I don't have anything to contribute that is helpful to the OP's inquiry, but I wanted to add that I've been noticing how much the blu-ray section has been growing at Best Buy over the past three weeks. Likely at other places as well, but in my area, Best Buy had the biggest selection with a noticeable growth from 1/2 an aisle to one whole aisle with movies trickling onto the end caps. Of course, this is a great thing to see!

Ya at work (Best Buy) we recently had to expand our blu-ray section since it was starting to get pretty tight. We also added a couple of endcaps with some blu's on them. Always happy when I get to put blus away because I get to see what movies to buy

my guess is that it can be mid 2010, but who knows.

it is a bit higher then 5% (wasn't it 6% in Nov and a bit higher now) but you are averaging over the year, since we are talking emerging market with growth, that would not be correct. BD is now around 10% and if it triples it will be around 30% at the end of the year with an average o 20-25 (since the last quarter is the most important one)

I currently buy 2 Blu's every 2 weeks, which is how often I get paid. If I still owned my Video store, I'd be buying at least 3-4 a week, which is what I was averaging when I was buying DVDs for my personal collection. But unfortunatly, the Redbox went up across the street and that was impossible to compete with. So, I'm no longer own my store and have a regular job which limits how many I can buy.

Yea, me too. The thing is I never bought VHS or DVD's in the past but ever since prices went down on Blu-ray players and HD tv's....I decided to jump in and when I popped in my first Blu ray, I was totally in love! To me, paying money for a movie is a small investment for 2 hours worth of mind numbing entertainment. To think....the studio spent millions of dollars to put this flick together so that you can pay less then $30 to watch it anytime you like.

Maybe work at a place where you can get a discount on your Blu-ray's?

So I think it's great that Best Buy is adding more space, but I am not likely to spend anything at Best Buy at least for Blu-rays when there is amazon.com.

I know the savvy people on this website use amazon quite a bit, but I'm thinking most people 40+ go to places like Best Buy to buy blu's.

So I'm thinking that this (the triple in sales) will come true if Best Buy starts selling discs for an average of $19.99 instead of $24.99, with frequent sales on those prices... especially in this economy.

Aren't software sales already at around 30% of total sales for films released on DVD and BD on the same day? I mean, I know Amazon would probably be skewed in BD's favor, but they have TDK on BD accounting for about 40% of total sales for that movie.

And really, what is the deciding factor for the point where BD overtakes DVD? Wouldn't it be the software market penetration? Because for example, it doesn't matter if 70% of people prefer DVD if 95% of movies bought are on Blu-ray. It's software that decides when a format is dying or dead, or would you take a look at the VCR devices still being produced and claim VHS still has life?
