Getting your feet wet is tricky, personally I would get the THX Certificate. It would be great starting point. Besides, everyone remotely with a clue will know what THX is. So to me that looks like a good place to start. Also it's BestBuy and half the people there don't have many certificates if any. I am looking at a job at Geek Squad and the few times I talked to them, they seemed very impressed to hear that I am working on my A+ and Net+. So I am confident I will get a job there, I think they have there own test they make you take though.

I learned from Trial and Error on setting up for family and friends. I am at the moment worried about getting Certified for computers, then Home Theater. But would really like to get THX Certified. So I can't tell you much about, but what's on the site. I know Moefiz is working on it, maybe he will chime in.

Anyone know how much Geek Squad people get paid? A few years ago, I noticed one of my old high school science teachers working for Geek Squad, and assumed it was just a 2nd job he picked up. But everytime I go into BB, regardless of the time of day or day of the week, he's always there. So I think it's his main job. I doubt the school fired him (he was a good teacher, and had been there for a while), so I assume he willingly made the switch.

I have no experience and they want to start me out at $10.25 an hour (full time) once I get my A+. But I am also getting reviewed in 3 months for a raise and possible promotion. So I think Geek Squad is a good place to start and get your feet wet. Since most our idiots there, I hear the good works quickly get promoted or stagged by the bigger IT company's around.

Edit: Also BestBuy's discount is nice. I been told you pay 5% above what they pay!

well although my career is along these lines it is not my expertise. I work in the low voltage industry which encompasses many types of systems. To name a few Fire alarm, Security systems,Tel Data, Access Control, CCTV, MATV, Nurse Call, Limited HVAC, and along your lines PRO Audio. How PRO well one off the companies you can work for did the sound and some A/V install on PETCO park.

Starting out pay in my neck of the woods is over 16 dollars an hour plus basic benefits.

Now back to topic. Is this a thread for professional home installers ? I am not one but I installed my own things, Don't like it when others come and touch my stuff. Don't have the whole 7.1 audio speakers thing yet but if/when I do, I'll take care of it myself

Babelfish sucks. After the translation, I still have no idea what this says.

I know a few installers, and most started out working for Best Buy or Sound Advice. $10.50 to start sounds about right, but if you have any aptitude you advance pretty quick. If you have a Magnolia Dept. in your Best Buy try talking to them, that way you don't get stuck plugging RAM and sound/video cards onto motherboards.

You could always go to a top school for finance and get into i-banking. Make a lot of money (work 100 hours a week), retire in your 30's (though you probably have the body of a 60 year old, from all the stress), and then enjoy spending the rest of your life in your nice HT.
