Default Should I buy a Sony 550 with this setup?

Right now I'm looking at this deal at Best Buy:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....at166900050009

I used to own a PS3 (had it for a year), but we literally never played games and only used it to watch movies. I sold it (60GB) for the same price I bought it for, I guess its getting to be a bit of a collectors item, and am looking for a new stand alone blu-ray player.

I've started out with a pretty inexpensive basic system and am ready to start doing some upgrading. I currently have a 40" 1080i tv with one hdmi input. We have a 5.1 Yamaha receiver (no HDMI input). I'd like to update our receiver and get a decent blu-ray player and then later we will upgrade our tv. I'm looking for the best value in a blu-ray player under $400 and a receiver under $500. It seems like a sony is a pretty good product at a pretty good price. What say you? I'm not particular to any brand, just want the best I can get for the price.

I also sold the PS3 and bought a S550. The S550 will be perfect for you since it decodes all the HD audio codecs so you can delay getting a new receiver for now. Just connect the 5.1 analog outs to your receiver and you're ready to go. It's a solid player with great build quality (made in Japan) and it's fairly quick.

Costco has the 550 and the matching HT-SS2300 HTiB for $679.

can I make a suggestion, I sould suggest that you buy the sony str-dg920 receiver and the sony bdp-s350 blu-ray player from amazon.com. 1) you will be getting a better receiver with better features and it will sound better with it being full bandwidth. it is on backorder, but I have seen that they are filling orders quickly. Otherwise buy it at techdepot.com (office depot affiliate) and then pay the $25 shipping but you will have it right away. 2) you will not need the sony 550 whether or not you buy the 820 or the 920 because you can run all the audio out via hdmi and so there is no need to have the internal decoding of the 550 since the receiver will do all the work for you & no need of analog outs since it will all go out via the hdmi cable.

EDIT this is the same price as what you are looking at. or less

I bought that player last week. I didn't intend to spend that much but Best Buy was out of everything else that was cheaper. Due to being tired and not wanting to look around I bought the 550.

To my surprise it was made in Japan (according to the box) which is unusual in this day of the nauseating "made in China" norm. It appears to be fairly well made. It's all plastic but seems pretty solid.

I bought the cheapest hdmi cable there and hooked it to my Mits 720p TV. The two discs my wife bought (house bunny and Zohan (sp)) looked increadible. I put in a DVD terminiator and I was amazed how good it looked.

All this time I thought my TV had upconverted every source but I can see now that is not the case.

A great player for $400 but I bet one could find it on sale somewhere like Sams or WalMart.
