Paramount M.A.S.K. (dir. F. Gary Gray)

Quote:
Paramount Teams With F. Gary Gray To Turn ‘MASK’ Into Film Franchise

Paramount has made a deal with F. Gary Gray to team with Hasbro to develop to direct MASK. The live action film will be built based on the ’80s Kenner action figures and the animated series. MASK is an acronym for Mobile Armored Strike Kommand, a task force led by Matt Trakker whose goal is to take out the criminal organization VENOM. The film will be produced by Hasbro, and Gray. They will move quickly to set a writer to hatch a contemporary subculture movie with a youth empowerment angle.

Gray is coming off $1.2 billion global grossing The Fate of the Furious and Straight Outta Compton, and he is in pre-production on the untitled Men in Black reboot for Sony Pictures that will star Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson. That film, produced by Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald and exec produced by Steven Spielberg, begins production in June for May 17, 2019 release. Gray sparked to MASK because it is a vintage property that could be revamped and have something to say to a contemporary audience. For Paramount, it is exactly the kind of franchise swing that the rebuilding studio needs.

I always use to get MASK and Transformers mixed up when I was a kid. I was more of a He-Man and Thundercats fan.

A fave of mine growing up. Always wanted to see it as a live action.

Plus loved that theme song.

Always wanted to see a M.A.S.K. film. Not sure about the director or the angle, though.

Youth empowerment sounds like those "Knowing is half the battle" segments after a G.I. Joe episode. Sounds like this will could be aimed for a PG. Yeah, I know it's a stretch but who can say until filming starts.
F. Gary is gonna be fine for this. He has the pedigree for action and comedy so I have confidence that he'll get it done.

This is awesome news! MASK was my number one cartoon and my favorte toys over all else. There is only one thing that Gray has to do - make sure that the main vehicles and characters match up with the look of the cartoon. It’s the least they can do. I have a feeling that the movie would follow in the design footsteps of Transformers where only Optimus Prime looks like the comic book version so it’s likely that Matt Tracker’s Thunderhawk will be the only vehicle that looks like the cartoon version.

The other advantage that the movie will have is that the storyline should beat out anything from the cartoon because the show’s storylines were forgettable and none had any consistency.

The movie will probably also revolve around Scott Trakker the teenager, who’ll also need some hot girl sidekick besides T-Bob. Scott and T-Bob will likely be cooler and less annoying than their cartoon versions. T-Bob will probably be some cool ass KITT-talking Vespa robot.

Under Gary Gray, the casting will likely be pretty cool as hell. I can picture Marky Mark as Dusty Hayes, Michelle Rodriguez as Vanessa Warfield, Pedro Pascal as Julio Lopez, and Corey Hawkins as Hondo McLean.

Good God.

This isn't April 1st still, is it? The only way this (maybe) works is if it is aimed squarely at kids. Any attempt to make it "cool" or "edgy" will result in a hilarious flop.

This might have been the last cartoon series of the 80's I owned any toys from...and to tell the truth, I should have been long past playing with toys at that point (I turned 14 in the summer of '88). I remember enjoying the show enough, but, like most "toyetic" cartoon shows from that decade, it's probably garbage by today's standards. It wasn't really until Batman: TAS in '92 that there was a syndicated action/adventure cartoon series that prized storytelling over shilling for a toyline.

Now this I like

If they stick to the cartoon and not change anything (eg. gender, race, vehicle/mask/equipment designs etc...) this could be great.

Alas we all know they'll change everything.

I grew up with M.A.S.K cartoon but I don't think it has the popularity to carry it on the name brand alone I also loved C.O.P.S cartoon and would be cool to reboot that and teach the youth to respect C.O.P.S

It will be huge. It’s Fast and the Furious with transforming vehicles and masks that give various powers. Basic boxoffice gold.

Oh
Let me help you get your outrage out of the way. Then illustrate how little people care about these properties. 2 years ago IDW merged. Transformers, M.A.S.K. , Six Million Dollar Man, Rom, and GI joe. For two years this has been Matt Tracker.

I was going to say this will probably be more like the IDW comic and less like the cartoon but it looks like someone got that out of the way.

Hah, I had Switchblade too, it was awesome. Must still be in a box somewhere.

Also had the black sportscar/seaplane Raven, still have it on my desk (no idea where its driver/pilot is though).

Um..
Not sure about this movie... like most things, could be great, could be terrible. But I’m fine with them trying. If it’s rubbish, what have I really lost? Apart from a couple of hours I guess.
