Default BD vs HD DVD vs DVD: Animé edition

Watch impress have done a comparison of the BD, HD DVD and DVDs of Bandai Visual's latest releases:

http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/av/do...44.htm?ref=rss

I recommend http://www.excite.co.jp/world/english/web/ if you want to web translate (paste the link, click the right radio button to select JP-> ENG and click the submit button)

Although most of the text is in Japanese, the pictures should do a decent job in telling the story on their own. It looks to me like the BD versions (high bitrate AVC) maintain more of the grain than the HD DVD (high bitrate VC1).

neat link, thanks for this.

im trying my best not to sound like too big of a BD fanboy, but the HDDVD shots really do look like they were run through a 'soften' filter or is just blurred slightly

It looks like both versions could have been better but the grain and line sharpness is clearly preserved better in the BD version.

I saw the Honneamise HD DVD last week on a 32" 720p set. Honestly it looked like it retained just the right amount of grain, and nothing looked incorrectly filtered

On the rocket takeoff though, it shows how the jaggies have been smoothed out on all those paint chips by the extra space though. On a big screen that would definately matter
