ive been having problems with my bluray playback.. the image is extremely snowy and grainy. Some scenes are better than others. but for the most part its pretty presistant. i dont know if its the PS3 setting, the TV settings or just the TV itself. its a 32" Samsung LCD. Its looks this way on 720p and 1080i. Help?! this is a still pic i took of the 300. surely its not supposed to be this way.

I think the grain on 300 was intentional. That is the way the director intended.
Try these forums topics. They relate to grain and may answer your questions. https://forum.blu-ray.com/search.php?searchid=119461 |

Have your Samsung set professionally ISF calibrated. Samsung televisions are set soooo horribly out of the box. An ISF calibration typically runs around $300-500, but it will make your television look nearly flawless, and it should help immensely with that grainy snowy stuff you are seeing.

how many times does this have to be said... the grain is INTENTIONAL... it's made to look like it was lifted from the pages of a graphic novel... there's absoutely NOTHING you can do about it...

Try changing the PS3 settings to 720p, it might reduce some of the grain.

See above it's been like that since the film was made, it's intentional.

no thats not true at all folks, i have the 300 blu ray disc and my roomate has the regular dvd, the picture on the reg dvd is leaps and bounds over blu-ray 300, the grain is not there on the original but is on blu ray. i have experienced this grain on almost every one of my 15 bluray movies on my ps3 so its not just the way 300 is. i am experiencing the same problems the first poster is!

The SDVD itself has such a poor video bitrate rating that the intentional grain effect wouldn't be as noticeable since the image is much softer and will naturally be riddled with artifacting. In essence, the SDVD blends out the effect because it is, by its very nature, a lesser quality transfer.
As for the other titles, it's possible that they are the inferior transfers in MPEG-2 codec. What are your other Blu-ray titles? Paramount is notorious to have absolutely horrific transfers up to this point. |

I saw this movie opening weekend in the IMAX. The grain was there then and it is supposed to be now. That is what the filmmakers intended.

I think this is going to be a dumb question but here we go. I have a 1080i hdtv using the PS3 as the blu-ray player. My fiancee has a standard definition television. She wants to watch 300 and I only have it on blu-ray. Now, can I take the PS3 over her house and watch it or just have movie night over my house? In other words, could I watch the blu-ray through video output cables(I got a feeling the answer's no)?

the answer is yes if you have the cables, and set the right settings. (your PS3 came with at least one set of connectable to standard definition "cables")
Be sure to know how to change the settings back and forth (or how to let the PS3 do that) so you don't get into the situation of not being able to change settings after being connected to a tv that is not the same as your current settings ![]() |

Ya... you will have to change the settings on the PS3 before changing to your different cable. MORE IMPORTANTLY! Be sure to convert the PS3 settings back before leaving her place. I have a friend who used someone elses HDMI on his PS3 and TV, but forgot to change it back before disconnecting the HDMI cable. He was left without his PS3 for a week until he could go out and get his own HDMI cable.
