Default Question about Onkyo 805 & 605?

Is the only difference the exterior looks and that the 805 is THX Ultra2 certified? Is that why its twice the price? Or is there something I'm missing here?

Not a big difference is there??? One of my friends got an 805 because he REALLY liked THX. I stuck with the 605 and saved $500. Not worth the extra cash to me. I will get a new receiver in a few years when the price of a THX certification goes down. Or I need another HDMI input.

...or 40 more watts per channel. (if you plan on pushing high end speakers, this is imperative)

ehhh, still not sure. Perhaps I'll get the 805 just for the extra power. The only thing that worries me is the popping issues, so I still might hold out or just play the return game and keep returning the receiver until I get one that satisfies me.

I couldn't agree with you more. All I wanted is a receiver that could decode TrueHD and DTS-MA and could accept multichannel PCM. For THX Ultra certification and a few extras I don't feel the justification on the price is worth it.

That is true but most high end speakers also have really good sensitivity so they can be driven well with a not so powerful amp.

.08 versus .05, hardly noticable

While Blu-ray evolves, more and more movies will have 7.1 channel sound, I personally don't fell matrixed 7.1 sounds all that different that 5.1.

It also has "out to an amplifier" in case 130wpc isn't enough...or if you spent all your cash on this receiver you can connect inexpensive 7.1 pc speakers this way while you save up for real speakers

The 605 doesn't have these

You mean pre-outs that almost every receiver already has?

Yup, 'cept for 605. Prob also quality of components in 805 are better than 605. Theres a reason its bigger and heavier.

Anyhow you seemed to have already decided that theres no point to pay more for 805....so why start a thread? Get the 605 already and enjoy

Unless you're getting a degree as a debator and are in need of practice
