Exclamation 3D Blu-ray coming soon

Is it even possible?
Was just watching a 3D movie in my local IMAX, when i realized, hey if IMAX movies can be in blu-ray (roving mars) then won't it be cool if they put 3D imax movies in blu-ray too? just pop some 3D glasses and there ya go.

Is it even possible or just crazy imagination?

Cool 3D movies, friend or foe to blu-ray?

3-D cinema started in the 1950's and resurfaced in the 1980's, and again in our time. I said it before, and I'll say it again. It is a fad that fades in and out.

Firstly, not everyone likes watching movies in 3-D. More than a fair share of people get a headache from it. While it could create a new marketing frenzy, there are some aspects to correct to make this a long term marketing goal.

I would love to see Beowulf in 3D at Imax, but I'm not sure I want to sit at home, looking like an ass, with paper glasses on my face everytime I watch the film. Those things do get torn up and lost, you know.

Now, if they included a couple of nice plastic ones that fold neatly into the movie case, then I can see this being a viable idea. Paper glasses is not a fashion statement people want in this hyer image sensitive society.

We want inexpensive extras glasses where videos are sold. You can't just tell people "don't loose the glasses", we want to know you are supporting it! Moreover, stick with the clear lenticular 3D lenses, and ditch those red and blue ones. They muck with the color of the movie, not to mention our eyes.

Finally, give the people the option of watching the movie normally, or in 3D. Unless I am mistaken, I recall a lens where the movie appears 3D to the wearer, but normal to the person without the glasses

A few marketing changes can make 3D an expanding market and not just another wave of extra cash that flows out with the tide - taking the consumer with it.

Those don't work at home. That's why they're using LCD shutter glasses. Polarized needs high-silver screens as well unavailable in 99.9% of homes

bring on Friday the 13th 3D and Spacehunter Adventures in the Forbidden Zone and I'd be a happy man...and I'm ok with the red/blue glasses, it adds an extra cheeze factor to the movie.

Ok, then some cheap LCD glasses that run on AAA's. My Sega Master System 3-D glasses plugged into the unit to keep it in sync. If this is the case, then I say it is too much trouble.

well, i saw NBC in 3d and it was stunning. this isn't a fad. 3d in the 50s and 80s was. yeah, its cool, sh1t pops out, whatever. but the 3d being done today is about there being depth to the screen. digital 3d litterly looks like you are looking through a window and you would swear to god while you watch it that you could simply walk into the picture. also, mitsubishi (correct me if im wrong) is creating a blu-ray 3d player. the thing processes the image on the bd disc and converts into a 3d picture on the fly. so really, its not going to affect blu-ray disc sales at all, in fact it could improve them. ps i wouldn't be shocked that if someday down the road the ps3 got this ability in a firmware update.

They already have them from Samsung. Every new TV they have has a sync port that goes to an IR transmitter to keep the sync. I think the plan is for $69.99 for the transmitter and 2 pairs of glasses.

Theyre showing it being used with a faking 3-D software. The movie could be encoded for it from the beginning though

With shutter glasses, it would be possible to quickly turn on and off the different lenses and display the alternate stereoscopic channels at the right time into the correct eye. It goes so fast that the human eye can not pick it up, so to you it would be smooth. Timing is essential, but if it is done right, it would look just like it does in the modern theaters with polarized lenses.
I saw Beowulf last night in digital 3D, it was amazing. Great story, great graphics, great 3D. I can't say anything about IMAX except if you don't get a good seat, just leave cause last time I saw a 3D IMAX movie, I got a very bad neck and head ache cause I was in such a bad location.
I can't wait to see Beowulf on my TV, and it would be awesome to have a 3D option. On a PS3 all you'd need is a USB device that would send a wireless signal to the glasses you'd wear and it would synchronize the timing to the movie.

I hope 3D takes off cause it IS a great technology. I feel it is the future of film and more films should be in 3D. The technology has advanced so much, I think now is the time that 3D is a viable option to add more to a film.

Gee... I don't think my Bravia plays at 120 Hz... I'll have to look. It would suck if I can't view it after spending so much on my TV.
Well it is not a mass market product yet, so by the time I get into 3D, I might be in the market for a new TV again anyways (like in 10 years or so).

Those are DLPs only. LCD and plasma can't keep up with the high refresh rate needed at the moment.

As far as headaches go, I think the real challenge with 3D is creating "natural" 3D. People have been doing gimmicky things with it like trying to get things to come out of the screen at you, instead of just using the screen like a "window" to a different world instead. Shutter glasses also need to improve, with faster reaction times, more opaque when on, clearer when off and larger field of view. They could also use a redesign for better comfort.

Due to processing lag that kind of solution might not work so well. That's why Samsung have their output port instead.

Exactly, you need to sync to the display, not the transport

Disneyland used to give out plastic glasses for Captain Eo and then collect them when you were done. I thought it was kinda gross wearing glasses that you have no idea who wore them before you. Of course you didn't know this when you went in, but you did when you came out and they wanted them back.

IMO 3D is an amusment park thrill. It adds nothing to the dramatic structure of a film and if anything, it looks artificial. Normally, I'm not going to wear special glasses to see a film in my home, or anywhere else for that matter. Maybe at a party or something.

For a long time there has been talk of 3D movies using holograms, where you would look into a window to a 3D world. Or reflection holograms that projected out from a screen, but there are so many technical problems to be solved first. I'm not even anticipating it.

Default I disagree, I think it can add something

Superman in IMAX 3D was incredible. Though they only did a few scenes in 3D, so I don't know what it would do to your head after two hours of it.

Next Lucas flick will definitely be 3D.

Beowulf and Polar Express 3-D were specifically done 3-D

The "conversion" movies (live action stuff) tend to look flat

Well, this has been discussed on other threads. The capabilities with blu-ray when the PIP is implimented, unlike HDDVD, you can have two streaming videos of HD picture. Wheras HDDVD has ony one HD signal and one SD signal. With having two HD signals you can switch back and fourth as long as you have a 120htz tv(I think) to view the framerate of the picture so that the glasses can allow you to view the image in 3d and not in some gimmicky way like those old films. James Cameron is actually filming Avatar right now with a new 3D camera that actually works like our eyes. Here is a link to show you how the camera works. The film is going to come out in 2009 when the effects are finnished.

I know at Disney they're doing a lot of work on 3-D stuff. Robert Zemeckis set up shop with Disney, with A Christmas Carol being his next with Jim Carrey (mo-capped of course, in 3D), and Tim Burton has two 3D animated projects in the pipeline, including a remake of Frankenweenie.

And with Cameron doing the 3D thing at Fox...looks like BD has got the most prominent 3D stuff in the coming years.

Sorry, the current BD specification no way to deal with the 48fps content necessary for "true" cinema 3D in 1080p... the Final Standard Profile PIP feature won't change this.

Don't hold your breath for HDM 3D. For now, real 3D can only be done driven by a computer source and the few Samsung (and Mitsubishi?) 3D capable DLPs.
