Default Upgrading your TV Collection

Will you go through the process of buying each season individually or will you wait for a complete series set?

Depends on if they are released in Hi Def and capable of being released in Hi Def, and which show, quality, etc.

For the most part, I have been with only my favorite shows.

I would only re-buy tv shows I already own if I can get them cheap, so probably not at launch but sometime in the future. I want to get Heroes: S1 and the upcoming Lost S 1 & 2 but they are too expensive for me to consider re-buying. Also shows that I doubut would recieve a HD upgrade for the price difference ie. South Park : S12 is coming but the blu-ray like $55 and the DVD only like $35 and the animation style of S.P doesn't call for high-def material.

I don't buy many TV seasons, it has to be a real favorite for me to justify spending that much money on something that I likely will only watch once or twice, based off of a 22-26 episode season. All I have are Firefly and Justice League Season 1 right now. Some of my favs, DS9 and Angel, would likely not benefit from a blu-ray release and might not come out anyway, and I've given up on watching DVDs. Any TV I buy on blu would have to be in widescreen because as much as I don't mind letterboxing, I absolutely loathe pillarboxing for some reason.

Thumbs up

For a favorite TV series, I will continue purchasing the Seasons but on blu-ray instead. For example, I own the first 3 seasons of Lost on DVD but I plan on purchasing the remaining seasons on blu-ray.

Some seasons, I just can't keep up....I sold the first 10 seasons of the Simpsons because I didn't see myself collecting the entire series

Each season individually. I like having them that way for portability reasons. I can bring a season over to a friends house/on a trip.

I think Angel would look great on Blu considering it was shot in 16:9.

I actually held off on buying the Scrubs seasons because I had read that all of the episodes had been originally shot in a 16:9, widescreen format.

With just a few exceptions, I basically own just Star Trek series on DVD. And I may have to double-dip on those as they are released over time. For recent shows, there's nothing I'm interested in buying, except maybe BSG or Smallville. Otherwise, ironically, I've been seeking out a lot of old school stuff like The Wild Wild West and This Is Your Life, to shows that I doubt will ever be on BD, so I felt comfortable picking them up on DVD.

I don't wait for sets. I buy the boxes individually, because I want them fast and sometimes a set is never in the making. But I will certainly upgrade because of things BD can give you.. such as interacting features like the "smart menu".

The only TV show I'd consider upgrading is LOST. I own all four seasons on DVD and I would've gotten seasons 3 and 4 on Blu but only the latter's been released here so...

I'll just wait until the first three get released here and I'll get them then.

I have Heroes 1 & 2, Lost 3 & 4, and Sarah Conner Chronicles on Blu. All totally worth it on Blu. The next (last?) season of Scrubs is likely to hit Blu, but I don't know about the first 7. The quality of the DVDs is astonishingly poor so I would hope they rectifty that with a Blu release.

I won't repurchase any TV series. I don't have many to replace and the ones that I do have I don't watch enough to spend money to replace them. I only have on Blu Ray player and that is of course connected to my projector and I don't want to piss away lamp light watch TV shows. As of now, I prefer TV on DVD to TV on Blu Ray.

Just a note on the South Park comment a few posts up:

From southparkstudios.com
"On Wednesday March 11, 2009 at 10 pm EST South Park goes HD. We are really excited because, not only will the season premiere be in HD, but we have been working hard for over a year re-rendering previous seasons in native HD. We are not up-converting the episodes, but actually going into each episode and re-rendering every shot and frame at true HD."

Maybe it'll be worth it after all?

TV seasons dont have much replay value in my book. I really dont care to own any of them on blu ray, expept maybe Sopranos....but who knows when we'll see that come to blu.

It all depends on timing. For example, when Seinfeld had come out, I was buying season by season as I just couldn't wait. What I hate about that, is that in the end, they released a complete box set that is more compact, nicer box, etc. And that other huge difference is that a complete box set is so inexpensive compared to the purchase of those individual seasons. Especially with deals on places like deepdiscount.com and amazon.com.

Very nice complete boxes exist for some other series I collect such as Flintstones and Miami Vice.

I guess the worst was buying 3 Original Series Star Trek DVD sets at a small fortune each. And of course, I will have to re-buy them on Blu-ray this year perhaps.

At least I will get a great deal a complete Cheers box set that is coming out soon. I am so glad I waited for that complete series this time (can't wait to see what the box will be like)....

Enjoy your TV collections.

I held off on buying a lot of TV shows becase they were being shot in high def so I thought they would be one of the first things to come out on Blu Ray.

I didn't buy

Band of Brothers (because it was shot in HD and I knew I would want it that way)
24
Heroes
Lost
The L-Word
Smallville ( It's a good thing I didn't because I realize it's not a good show)

getting back to your original question I will probably buy the seasons seperatly, there is less chance on of the disks will be scraped up.

What does it being shot in HD have to do with anything? You do know that film still has higher resolution and definition the digital. Correct? So you wanting it because it was shot in HD isn't a reason to buy it on Blu Ray. Almost all TV shows are now shot in HD or Film.
