Default I'm upgrading from 5.1

hey guys,

I'm finally upgrading from my 9 years old Onkyo TX-L5 5.1 receiver, and I'm thinking about getting the 7.2 TX-SR707, I've been doing some readings about it, and I even downloaded the manual.

now, I haven't been into these stuff since but since I bought a Blu-Ray player I thought that this is it, I gotta upgrade. I know that the TX-SR707 is a 7.2 receiver, how come it got 11 speakers output? and will i really feel much different with two subwoofers other than more bass?

is it worth the price?

IMO it would be a worthwhile upgrade to get full HDMI capability and lossless audio. Don't get too hung up on the fact that it has two subwoofer pre-outs though. They send the exact same information to both subwoofers. It's a nice touch, but all you need to use is a 3$ Y-splitter to get the exact same results from any receiver with only one sub pre-out.

The 707 has extra speaker connections because it has the new Dolby ProLogic IIz, which adds front height channels. For more on that read here.

And I don't have anything against Onkyo, but if you're going to invest in a receiver upgrade check what the other brands have to offer and make sure you're getting all the features you need/want.

+1, because believe it or not, different manufacturers process sound differently, and thus produce a different sound. You may find that you like the sound of another brand with your current speakers.

my budget is maximum around 950$ that's kind of all what I got for no, I'm even going to use my old 5.1 speakers for kind of a month or two before getting new 7.1+ set.

so, yeah around 950$ cuz that's how much they sell the 707 where I live... and that's after the discount, can't afford ordering it online cuz shipping will cost me a lot more of 950$ total.

I don't know if the price has changed or not, but I'm looking to buy a Pioneer Elite SC-25 and when I talked to a rep at 6th Ave via the online chat they were selling them for $1099 with free shipping. There's also no tax if they don't have a physical store in your state. I know that's a little over your budget, but it may be something you want to consider.

I checked it out, but I guess I'm going with the Onkyo, we don't get Pioneer stuff here where I live, except for Car sound systems + Pro Logic IIz is important for me since it will be supported by many games in the future *hopefully*

but the part that I'm not getting is, how is this receiver ( 707 ) considered a 7.1 (7.2) when it has like 11 speakers ?

Center, Front, wide front, top front, surround, and read surround back speakers?

isn't this suppose to be like 11.1 (11.2)?

what am I missing here?

You can only have wide front or top front running. Not both. It can go up to 9.2 if you like.

so I can like use:
A center speaker
Front speakers
Surround speakers
Surround back speakers
A subwoofer
(the known 7.1)
+
either Front high speakers(PL IIz) or the Wide Front speakers?

that wouldn't be a problem I guess, since wide front isn't "that" important for Dolby or DTS signals,, right?

That's correct. I guess it would depend upon the layout of your room as to whether you would benefit more from the wide or the high.

The idea of having the sound comming from all directions is great. The problem is that most if not 99 percent of all movies are only 5.1. I am not sure what is going to be comming out of the other four speakers. It cannot be true surround if the movie isn't sending a true signal to the speakers. You will most likely get a noise similar to your surround speakers comming from the other four.
