Default Amazon "looking into" buying Landmark theaters

Interesting story:

https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2018/08/16/...in-stocks.html

Reminds me of when the movie makers owned the theaters. What do you think? Would Uncle Sam get in the way?

I doubt Uncle Sam cares, Landmark isn't that big, are they?

I was thinking about this the other day, I asked myself is there a huge difference between a movie studio owning a theatre that shows their content and a movie studio or parent company owning an ISP and streaming service that shows their content?

We have Apple stores and Disney stores. Would there be a huge difference between a Disney theatre?

Not if you're fine with $8 sodas and $10 popcorns.

I’ve recently started going to my local Landmark theater a lot due to thier partnership with Moviepass. It’s currently owned by a company cofounded by Mark Cuban (Dallas Mavericks owner). It could definitely use some upgrades and modernization and Amazon has the money to do that. I just hope that it will continue to focus on indie films. I wonder if Amazon just wants the theater chain or also it’s sister companies: Magnolia Pictures, HD Net/HD Net Movies, AXS TV, etc.

We only have AMC here... Something called UEC owns the ones by PSU an hour away, and in the other direction are locally owned joints. So AMC charges whatever they want and they don't care.

I've never even heard of Landmark Theatres to be honest.

Marcus Theatres bought out all Wehrenberg Theaters (established in 1906!) a couple years back, which was the multiplex cinema we had here. Since then they've completely renovated the place from top to bottom. New screens, Atmos setups, heated recliner chairs, a full restaurant and bar, etc. And of course, all the prices on everything went up also.

The Marcus Theatres theme though... well it stinks. It's basically just an unmemorable 3 notes or something, compared to the old theme song intro:

We used to also have a Kerasotes theater here until AMC bought them out, and promptly closed the theater less than a year later. It seems that smaller movie theater chains are getting bought out and disappearing fast.

2 of the 4 Landmark theaters in my area have full service, alcohol bars in them.

Sounds like a case for AMC A-List!

There is a Disney owned theater: The El Capitan in Los Angeles. Runs Walt Disney Pictures distributed films with unique experiences before or after the film.

I was referring to the food. Tickets are only 8 bucks surprisingly, and since I only see about one a month (if that), I'd actually lose money on A-List.

That's not exactly going to put AMC or Cinemark out of business.

If Amazon did buy Landmark, I'd expect some kind of special deal for Prime members, like maybe get in for free on Tuesdays, and free popcorn with every ticket bought.
