Default Movies: Based On True Events & Its True Source

Ok guys so i have something that could either work, or just fail miserably as a thread. I was thinking about how many movies are always based on true events(particularly horror) and was thinking what else is based on true events? Does anyone know of any? If possible the source that inspired the movie?

No, don't feel that way; some movies "based on true events" are pretty far off from what really happened. The Amityville case, for example, was far different from the two movies made about it.

"Artistic License" is the excuse, and you'll see all kinds of disclaimers about them. Lots of movies about possession, ghosts, and other supernatural stuff are "based on historical fact". That really isn't all that factual.

'Zodiac' really drew me in when I didn't think it would. I also think 'Invincible' is a great story.

Nope.
According to Tobe Hooper, the idea for featuring a chainsaw in a horror film came to him while in the hardware section of a crowded store as he contemplated a way to get out quickly through the crowd. The film concept arose in the early 1970s while he worked as a college professor at the University of Austin and as a documentary cameraman. He had previously developed the idea of a film centering on isolation, the woods, and darkness;, and was still percolating the idea of being isolated when he thought up the concept of the film. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was based loosely on the murders committed by 1950s Wisconsin serial killer Ed Gein, who served as the inspiration for a number of other horror films, including Psycho and The Silence of the Lambs.

I remember hearing it was inspired by true events...guess it was a loose statement

Often times movies based on true events are very speculative because they often involve a lot of details that no one is alive to actually tell the details or there are details included that just plain have to be made up in the case of people who commit crimes in movies, no one knows what they were doing at certain times that are depicted, it is just a guess really.
My favorited based on true events statement is in FARGO. It is not at all based on true events, it was a little joke by the Coens. I had to look it up to know it was not true. And if you want to find a movie that is extremely loosely based look at the Wikipedia page for The Stangers. It is not really based on true events at all unless you believe the Helter Skelter connection and that is a stretch.

And do not forget STAR WARS. It happened a long long time ago in a galaxy far away. J/K.

Amityville Horror was only real if you consider a story that someone made up to be real. They never had any evidence to back up their claims.

I remember that Ed Gein had huge attachment to his mother. She was his only friend and one true love (Psycho)

Police found the following in his house at the time of his arrest:
Human skulls mounted upon the corner posts of his bed, Skin fashioned into a lampshade and used to upholster chair seats, A vest crafted from the skin of a woman's torso, Socks made from human flesh, A sheath made from human skin and Organs in the refrigerator (Texas Chainsaw)

He liked to eat body parts (often would freeze them) and gut them in his basement (Silence of the Lambs)
