I know I've asked this a yr ago but I still can't myself to "double-dip" on certain releases. I mainly double-dip on action, animation, or movies with awesome cinematography. When a movie
Besides, the quality of a good upscaling can rival some mediocre HD transfer nowadays (I recently bought that toshiba xde player). For instance, I have lost in translation on dvd and I watched the hd-dvd version at a friend's place. I was NOT impressed by that HD transfer. How about you guys? do you guys just do it for the sake of collecting? |

Not for all movies. That's because some of these movies were shot in NTSC/PAL or 16mm and would not benefit from the 1080p transfer, AND if the sound is recorded on set and mixed at bit depth of less than 16-bits 48kHz. In essence, dirt cheap production. It might still be a good/great movie but they don't need to be in HD.
Movies shot in at least 35mm or 1080i/p video with sound recorded and mixed at 20-bit 92kHz would definitely benefit from HD, regardless of genre. fuad |

I personally only replace movies i have on dvd if i feel I'm gonna watch
them at least 5 times in the future....And I am at the point where i never will even consider buying something that doesn't have uncompressed audio unless it's like Planet Earth, Sunrise Earth |

Older titles that receive huge "facelifts" because of bluray are must buys for me. A great example is Casino, after seeing reviews I can't wait to get this in my collection. And eventually I want all bluray because I've sold most of my dvds already.

Why would anyone NOT want to have their movies presented in the best way possible? ![]() No matter how old or new a film is, it should have lossless and leave it up to the consumer to judge if it "benefits" or not. Atleast we get the best it can offer. |

The whole point of blu ray is to provide the best picture and sound. To ask do we need hi def sound is silly. Its part of the package and we should get what we pay for. So yes ,its important

If you watch some of the better Blu-ray examples (or HD DVD for that matter), upscaling starts to pale very soon, even in the XDE flavor. I have found most of my double dips to be worthwhile, however there aren't too many titles i have on DVD available on BD yet, so my double-dipping potential is limited. ![]() |
