Default Display driver has stopped

Maybe 50% of the time when viewing Blu-rays and about 99% of the time viewing HD-DVDs PowerDVD 8 will start freaking out, I'll hear the sounds/audio, but my screen goes crazy a couple of times all the while I get an error at the bottom of the page saying my display driver has stopped/recovered. It was working fine and then out of the blu (LOL) it started acting up. I've uninstalled and reinstalled both PowerDVD8 and my ATI drivers.... same issues.... need help

Thank you

no problem it's Vista 64 bit and I have 2 video cards running in crossfire a ATI 3870 and a 3850. AMD dual-core 2.6GHz and 4 gigs of ram as well.

I'm running Vista 64, and have Catalyst 4.12 installed for my 4850 512MB, using Power DVD 7.3 on my LG GBC-H2OL drive, everything that i've thrown at it splays very, very smooth, both Blu Rays and DVD's

AMD 9950 Quad Black Edition
4 Gigs of DDR2

Did Vista sneak in a driver update on you? It was working fine, then kaboom, it's acting crazy - driver issue.

Power DVD is still shutting down other drivers when it fires up - it looks for Aero - and if something is in there pitching, like a screen saver or power saver or something, it could be busting things up. I bet it's something obvious, and check your update history - I hope ATI didn't send in the clowns when you weren't looking.

I do game, but the issue is only when trying HD-DVD and blu-ray playback.

It could be the fact that you have 2 different cards running in crossfire - try taking out the 3850 and see if it replicates the problem, with nvidia cards running in SLI both cards have to be the same, it could be something is getting upset with the card mismatch. If you still get problems put the 3850 back in and take out the 3870 to see if one of the cards is flaky.

I uninstalled again and this time ran CCleaner to clean the registry. I can get PowerDVD to work with blu-ray, but I think the HD-DVD addon is what causes the problem. So I read Nero can play HD-DVD, so I installed that and it will play the HD-DVD and not blu-ray..... I don't like the picture on NERO, looks really dark and I tried messing with the settings and it didn't improve any. Oh well, I at least got playback on both formats working. Thanks everyone for the help!
