Default I stopped my self at the last minute!

Hi chaps,

I just wanted to tell you all about the situation I found my self in just this week. I have had my PS3 for 8 months now and am a very keen Blu ray supporter. I thought to myself, why not spread a little happiness this Christmas and buy my Dad a PS3 and some Blu ray movies. The problem I found is that on searching for the best deals on the net I kept comming across the Tosh HD DVD players. This would not normaly even cause a second look but I found myself being seduced by the cheap price and 7 free movies. I thought to myself why not buy my Dad a HD DVD player instead as I will save a bit of money and he will get 7 movies to boot. Before you guys go mad and try to tell me I am mad I went and got him a 40Gig PS3 and the Spidey Trilogy.

The point that I'm trying to make is that these deals that Toshiba are putting about are really getting people interested.....in the wrong format! I only chose Blu because I know better but many do not! this chrismas season is, as we all know, critical to the format war and I think that the BDA need to pull their sleeves up before HD DVD drag themselves back into the fight.

We do not benifit from BOGOF offers here in the UK so 7 free HD disks aswell as a cheaper player will entice people. Things such as region coding are hurting us also as we have to wait for months for the best releases on Blu. HD DVD titles can be imported easily usuallly at a reduced cost to UK prices.

Would it hurt to drop the region codes and hook us up with a few deals?

Steve

and that's the sad truth really. THhe only people that don't get excited over cheap HD-DVD players are people who know better - and most people don't know better.

The Bogos are great for keeping our software sales up, but not that many people walk into walmart to buy a player because Amazon is running a sale on blu rays. (I imagine Walmart offers some of these Bogos too, but it doesn't seem to be quite as often). And unless we can dominate in both areas, we won't win the war - we'll just tie I guess.

This is why I think Disney had a great approach with their Mall Tours. Get people to know better, and they will buy smarter (ie blu)

We don't even have the benifit of Mall tours or any such marketing. The closest we have is a few adverts on the TV. Most of our high street retailers don't stock either format. We have to try and serch the net for information which can of course be dangerous (AVS anyone!)

One thing that is a given regarding the movie format part of this thread is that early adaptors always pay more for everything, software, hardware and do take a few risks, but with a little on-line self educating, the answer becomes crystal clear to most. This site is where I started to investigate my choice of HD format. The people and facts represented here impressed the hell out of me and with the armed info I now had, my choice became no choice at all. There really was only one format to go with. Happy as a clam and never a moment of regret. Bobs your uncle and Jolly good old bean!
