Furthermore, one of the arguments of Tim Lucas is that the sigle "1.85" is not printed on the Italian posters of the film.
This is probably the most inept argument that I ever met, when you know that Italian movie posters are generally full of errors & mistakes, like the word "Technicolor" for many color films made with a different process, false credits (the original poster for "Night of the Living Dead" giving an "American name" to George A. Romero because the distributor thought than "Romero" sounded "too much Italian", and so on. I even have an Italian poster for "Son of Frankenstein" which simply forget to mention Boris Karloff among the players, so, with this "proof", I can develop a theory that this dear William Henry Pratt never was in the film as well...
One of the most ridiculous examples being the Italian posters and print of the Japanese horror film "Kaidan semushi otoko" (1965, directed by Hajime Satô), known locally as "Il pozzo di Satana" - where ALL the names of Japanese cast and crew are replaced by American names !

Those specs do sound promising. Dare I get my hopes up on this?

"Original film materials" generally means not the original negatives. If this is even a decent scan of a print then I'll still get it and choose it over the Arrow whenever I want to watch the film.

I'll take a presentation with inferior detail over one with great detail which gets a fundamental part of the presentation wrong. Same reason why I stuck with my DVD of Carpenter's Vampires when at the time the only Blu-rays had been "naturalized" and lacked the heavy red push which Sony/TT thankfully corrected for later releases.

You are entirely right of course, but apparently some people just see the "superior detail" and are totally unable to understand the importance of a correct image ratio.
Until now, and in the hope that the announced BluRay will be 100% accurate, I'm happy to have the Spanish DVD, as it's made from the same master than the old Anolis DVD, includes Italian and English soundtracks, and is much more preferable than the Arrow disaster !

Best-looking disaster I've ever seen.

The detail is great, but if you look at the whole picture (or lack thereof ), the "restoration" is a botchjob and does a great disservice to the film.

Naw, it was screwed from Day 1.

The quality of the scan is unimpeachable.
The issues of incorrect framing and occasional color timing that veers too warm were noted at release, and widely ignored.

The Arrow situation reminds me of Universal's Hammer releases, in particular BRIDES OF DRACULA. The DVD was nearly perfect in terms of colour and framing, but the later releases were cropped to 2.20:1, due to someone reading the film cans, which indicated that as Universal, did, in fact, crop them down for U.S. theatrical release. This does not make that right, and anyone who knew anything, or could be bothered to do 20 minutes of research, could see that.

A mistake was made and Arrow did not see to fix it. Stunning colors, but misframed, like a painting with a bad frame on it. Much like when the BF stated on their restoration of DRACULA, they they did not want to make it look like a Technicolor movie(!).

I hope VCI gets this right. The commentaries listed come from good people who love Bava. It looks very enticing.

The entire film is horribly misframed on the Arrow release.

Well this thread was an interesting read.

Looks like I'll have to keep an eye out for reviews of this disc once it drops.

Well, it looks like Arrow also scanned the area covered by the soundtrack, thus the off-center framing as seen on caps-a-holic.

Apparently, unlike the initially released specs suggested, Studiocanal's release uses Arrow's master, maintaining the 1.66:1 aspect ratio. It looks like VCI will be our only hope for a proper 1.85:1 release, somehow it has come to this...

I completely agree with Dark Night of the Scarecrow. I love that film and VCI really delivered with their Blu-ray and DVD releases of it. But what about The Bird with the Crystal Plumage?
