Default why doesnt blu look better than HDDVD?

I know blu ray holds twice as much information and is technically capable of a better picture. But that being said, why is there still not a single release that looks any better on blu than it did on HDDVD (that i can find)? Are our televisions not good enough yet to show the difference? Online reviews always say things like "Im pleased to report the picture is every bit as stunning as the HDDVD release last year...", but they never, ever say it actually looks better. it only sounds better...occasionally. this has always confused me...

What kind of TV do you have? Is it 720p or 1080p?

Probably because most movies that were released on both formats were made from the exact same encode.

720p is 720p 1080p is1080p, it will look the same regardless. the biggest factor in pic quality will be your tv and it's settings

how is it legitimate, yes there are a few that used the same encode, but when he says "why is there still not a single release that looks any better on blu" legitimacy is gone because there are also many that look a lot better on BD

The company, be it Universal, Paramount, whatever, would have to re-encode the movie to make it look better. The encode was made to use the space on an HD-DVD to its fullest potential since they're encoding for the least common denominator. An increase in PQ would probably not justify having the cost for re-encoding the whole movie.

Because he is asking, he is not starting a fight, why jump down his throat, this is why new guys do not ask what they need to ask, and we wonder why when they go to Best Buy or wherever they believe whatever the clerk tells them. All he wanted/wants is a good answer to his question, and he get flamed.

I think he is just using a generality, not bashing BD. try a little compassion.

It's the encodes. Any movies that are on both formats will have the same HD-DVD style Picture Quality. Just like any multiplatform games will look exactly the same as the 360 version. ...which is normally terrible. (Scratch that, its always terrible.)
Another thing that matters a lot is your calibration on your TV. There's calibration threads everywhere on this site, so i wont go into that.
And yes, obviously the sound on a blu-ray will be better than the average HD-DVD. Not sure if there's any Uncompressed audio on HD-DVDs or not. ...never really cared either since it was doomed from the start.

Anyway, There are many Blu-ray's out there that look and sound better than any HD-DVD. Casino Royale anyone?

Both Blu Ray and HD DVD can or could be mastered in a max resolution of 1080p. 1080p is 1080p yes we can get a higher bit rate on Blu's than they got on HD DVD but it is still a max of 1080p so there is no more picture resolution on Blu Ray than an HD DVD.
