BigOnAnime made a list of all of FUNimation's failures for a while, and now that MAL has blog access back, I present their's, and every major anime distributor's failures to you!
Some General Issues -Since FUNimation launched their EVS (Elite Video Subscription) service in late 2011, streams added from that point on have color range issues that have introduced black and white crush. https://twitter.com/BigOnAnime/statu...99780875943936 -Inconsistency in packaging/releases -Eco-cases. FUNimation has used these for years, and at one point stopped using them completely around 2013, however when they released Dangaronpa: The Animation's Limited Edition, it had eco-cases (and also some had the reversible-cover rip due to the security tab in some copies being able to stick to the insert thanks to the eco-case having the holes, and even scratched discs), it had an eco-case. It's now come back randomly. -Translation quality on simulcasts since the Winter 2014 season has seriously declined. Shows known for having rather problematic translations: No-Rin (Fixed on home video), Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign, Concrete Revolutio (Daisuki stopped using FUNimation's script midway due to the severity of the errors), HaruChika: Haruta & Chika Note: I'm perfectly aware some of these are honestly nitpicks, but some of these are some serious issues. This also demonstrates that something seriously has gone wrong at FUNimation. Most of the stuff from say 2007-2012 or so are honest mistakes (every company makes mistakes at some point, this is irrefutable fact), but as you can see, in 2016 there was TONS of stuff I found problematic, far more than I could have possibly imagined when I first made this list. Also, this is in no way comprehensive for stuff before 2015, though I honestly doubt there's nearly as much stuff. Last edited by professorwho; 08-30-2018 at 07:27 PM. |

2007:
Suzuka Volume 2 is missing the Kodansha logo on the spine of both covers. http://i.imgur.com/hQTVS1C.jpg http://i.imgur.com/D9NpgfW.jpg Denial of ever cropping Dragon Ball Z and blaming it on overscanning on TVs. http://dbzul.blogspot.com/2007/10/dr...emastered.html 2008: Shuffle! Volume 1 wrongly lists 4:3 instead of 16:9 for the aspect ratio on the back cover. [The disc itself is the proper aspect ratio.] 2010: Trigun Opening 1 plays on every episode as FUNimation slapped credits on the only clean OP they received. This mistake was done on Geneon's original release as well, but fixed in the Remix singles and Limited Edition tins. FUNimation fixed this issue on the Anime Classics re-release 2.5 years later. Birdy the Mighty: Decode ED and epilogues squished into a small box with FUNimation slapping credits on the side on a black screen with it due to a lack of creditless materials. http://i.imgur.com/G7PbKeG.png [The proper procedure in these instances is to do the credit-roll after the episode or at the very end of the disc.] Birdy doesn't have a Blu-ray release in Japan, it's still DVD-only. Creditless materials do seem to exist however, so no idea why in the hell Aniplex didn't provide them. This still does not excuse their actions though, the correct way to do credits is the Sentai Filmworks way, roll the English credits after the untouched Japanese ones. The other alternative that is not as good, but not too annoying is the Media Blasters/Nozomi way, roll the credits at the end of the disc. Reason why it's not the best? The opening credits contain the general staff that doesn't change from episode to episode. The ending credits however are different for every individual episode as they include basically everyone, and different people work on different episodes. Sekirei episode 1 ED cropped on bottom so FUNimation could insert their credits due to not receiving creditless materials. https://fandompost.vbulletin.net/for...sons-1-2/page2 2011: Evangelion 1.11: You Are (Not) Alone silent repackage Blu-ray having the DVD logo on both the slipcover and case. http://i.imgur.com/zoWEHjD.jpg Trigun: Badlands Rumble dub recasting debacle. https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/bbs...154527#1154527 Upscaling Spice & Wolf S1 rather than using the Japanese Blu-ray Box masters. https://fandompost.vbulletin.net/for...ge4#post114274 Screenshots Spice & Wolf II audio issues. FUNimation solicited their Strike Witches 2 release for 2/21/2012 on December 30, 2011. FUNimation's release was delayed until 10/2/2012. https://fandompost.vbulletin.net/for...-engsub-engdub Heaven's Lost Property: Forte: Kadokawa solicited the Blu-ray Box on July 22, 2012 for a 1/25/2013 release. FUNimation solicited their Heaven's Lost Property: Forte release for 3/30/2012 on December 7, 2011. The last Blu-ray single was released 5/27/11. FUNimation's original plan of it being a combo pack was scrapped, the MSRP was dropped from $69.98 to $64.98, became DVD-only, included 4 art cards for compensation, and was delayed to 4/17/2012. FUNimation's Blu-ray-only release of S2 was solicited on September 14, 2012 for a 12/18/2012 release, but was then delayed until a 6/25/2013 release due to the second Blu-ray Box. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news...d-only-release 2012: Sekirei: Pure Engagement Limited Edition artbox says "Sekirei: Pure Engagement" all over a box that's meant to hold both S1 and S2, not just S2, "Pure Engagement". 2016 Continued
The Vision of Escaflowne Kickstarter Campaign FUNimation decided to launch a Kickstarter campaign for a new dub for the beloved anime classic, The Vision of Escaflowne, one of the most successful shows in the history of R1, as well as the movie. The response to the Kickstarter was met with mostly negative to mixed reception, and is a little reminiscent of the problems people had with the Shenmue III Kickstarter. Video about it here: [Show spoiler] "Why would FUNimation need a Kickstarter to redub a show, one of Bandai's top 5 all-time bestsellers at that?". One of the main issues people had was the original dub being exclusive to the $175 tier later revealed to be CE-exclusive, and being DVD-only, as well as the possibility of recasting (which later ended up being the case). Another issue people had was the fate of the original dub for the movie, which DOES sync-up properly with the Japanese Blu-ray masters. (It was later revealed the original movie dub would be included)ANN Article Quote:

Not using real steelbooks ie. "Akira" and "Cowboy Bebop: The Movie". Not releasing "Mach Go Go Go" on its own thus barring fans from seeing the original, uncut "Speed Racer" that only took half a century to be officially released stateside.

Some things to note, I last updated this back in February 2017, and many of the links in the original post are broken, mainly the Fandom Post links due to them moving to a newer version of vBulletin a year ago. Many of these issues ranged from not too serious to more serious, but it goes to show just how sloppy FUNi has become. I haven't followed too much of what's been going on since I last updated this, but I doubt they've improved as a company. Hell, they still aren't doing disc art anymore, we're going on 6 years now of them doing this bland nonsense (the first shows to suffer were Fractale and Panty & Stocking).
It's stuff like this that is why I don't like FUNi anymore (they were once my favorite NA anime distributor), and why I'm not too fond of the current state of the industry. Given how they distribute stuff for CR, this leads to nearly everything going through FUNi. Quote:

Posted up to 2014. Done for the night. I altered some stuff from what BOA originally wrote- like adding in links to Blu-ray dot com database listings for certain releases when in context.
Big problem is the Fandompost links. They be dead! やれやれだぜ。。。 That'll be a pain to recover... |

Hell.... Go back to the original Blue gender release...nearly a year after the seventh volume before the final volume was released.... No excuse, no reason ever provided. There has been so many screw-ups since the beginning with them.

Everyone has made mistakes over the years, Sentai Filmworks had an absolutely horrible 2012-2013 for example.
Quote:
However, FUNi within the past few years got particularly bad and sloppy, that's why it's notable. I got so frustrated that it led to this list. It also doesn't help that their workload has significantly increased as they and CR grab nearly every single show during a time where there is anime overproduction and too many shows. This is also BTW why so many anime have had production problems in the past couple of years. A general messup thread would be nice though. I actually a while back made a blog entry that would do just that, but just in regards to releases, not "Oh this company made some really horrible joke on Twitter". https://myanimelist.net/blog.php?eid=780198 The AUKN forums also has a thread in regards to pretty much every botched UK release over the years. That's the sort of thing I was aiming for with that blog post, and it would be nice to see something like that for a general messups thread. https://forums.animeuknews.net/threa...e-discs.12497/ Last edited by BigOnAnime; 08-30-2018 at 06:03 AM. |

Dragonball Super Set 3 Blu-ray and DVD say it’s Rated TV-MA.
My Santa Rated TV-PG. Corrected in the re-release. Senran Kagura was supposed to include the OVAs, but at the very last minute Funimation said nope and acted like they never knew anything about that the Blu-ray pre-order was saying that it does. Afro Samurai Resurrection Blu-ray was supposed to be in 5.1 Dolby TrueHD but was actually 5.1 Dolby Digital. Exchange program was put in place and a Complete Collection was also made that fixes the problem. Pop Team Epic’s Toonami Broadcast shows a Preview of episode 7 of Hoshiiro Girldrop after showing a Preview of episode 8 on episode 7 during the Male voices version. No translations on the French segments besides Japanese on episodes 7 & 9 but 1 & 3 do have English translations in the broadcast. |
