Kind of gutted that the 3D version is the same aspect ratio as the rest, would have been nice to have had had the option.

The cynic in my assumes that there's another edition looming.

Are you absolutely sure? I need I know right NOW whether or not to cancel my UK pre-order. (In US)

Thank You

Was confirmed a few weeks ago the 3D version wouldn’t have the IMAX ratio.

What really annoys me is the people who assumed the 3D version would have the IMAX ratio, despite the back of the box and the fact that the entire film is IMAX going against that. Wishful thinking gone too far here.

Well all the other movies that had changing ratios didn't mention it either, but this was an entire movie in a different ratio.

Yes, it was released in Sweden this Monday and I got it in my mail last Friday so I watched it already.

If you look at the back cover of the U.K. 3D disc you can see it has Swedish subtitles as well, so it's the same edition released in Sweden and U.K.

The 3D is cropped, not the full IMAX aspect ratio.

First of all, I highly doubt that 2.39:1 was the directors' preferred version for Infinity War considering there was an extensive campaign on social media why the IMAX AR was the best and why they intended the movie to be seen like this. Link to the video, if you aren't aware of it.

Secondly, Disney and Marvel have most of their recent movies with IMAX scenes and have released these on 3D for every movie which had them until now. You can argue that 3D is dying or even dead? Maybe, but they still release a 3D version in Europe and elsewhere, so naturally everyone expected they will also have the IMAX ratio for it, especially considering the campaign they did to promote this AR, and actually having the full movie with it, not just specific scenes.

Lastly, you argue that this ratio has a lot of empty space? Do you prefer the empty space that those huge black bars leave on your TV? You get points if you tell me you have a widescreen projector screen or a widescreen TV. These are rare tho, and if you happen to have such then you can just buy the movie on 2D or 4K which traditionally release in 2.39:1. No one is hurt if they have both versions, just like they had it until now, for people who actually want to see the IMAX ratio with the more picture in it filling their TV screen more properly, and adding a lot of cool details in the background as well.

And by the way, 2:39 is some incredibly long ratio, better go and search how maths works with these.
Just one note, Disney and IMAX have an exclusive distribution deal and Disney has in the past released "open matte" versions of films entirely in IMAX that have not been seen since (Beauty and the Beast and Pirates 5 spring to mind).

With that fact in mind, the directors of Infinity War, being paid by Disney to promote the movie, promoting the IMAX ratio in a video posted on the IMAX youtube channel suddenly takes on a different light. More simply, it's possible the Russos have been told by Disney to push the IMAX version as much as possible during the press tour. Directors do it all the time. Patty Jenkins pushed the Dolby Cinema version of Wonder Woman during press for that film (even saying it was her favourite version of the film).

Sigh.

It's promotion.
Every Imax, dolby, everything video says its the best way.

There is no conspiracy, no dealings just trying to sell a movie that's it.

It's obvious now that they are preparing an IMAX version double dip, to release in some months or possibly simply alongside Pt. II next August.

Fingers crossed because they've never done anything like that for the MCU in the past. But I don't mind triple-dipping because I usually double-dip anyway (3D and 4k), so what's one more copy?

I could see them doing a LOTR scenario and release an Extended Cut just before part 2.

I would go for both 3D and 4K. Again.

Received blu ray today from zoom. Definitely wasn't expecting it. Considering solo is getting a 2 disc set, this blu ray seems like a lazy disc for such a huge film. Lovely slip though.
