Default Official PS3 Crackling Audio Thread

I have been reading about this all over the internet, and I am posting this to see if there are other people on this site who have encountered this problem and what they have done to remedy it. Basically, anytime I watch anything I get crackling of the audio on all three front channels anytime the dialog gets loud or with gun shots and explosions. From what I have been reading, this problem didn't start occuring until around update 2.43. Maybe, just maybe if enough people report this problem we can get a fix in a firmware update. If we don't, I will be buying a new Blu-ray player.

It sounds like your PS3's internal volume setting is turned up too high, producing clipping. What is your volume level set at?

I wish it were that simple. It is set at 0. Everything is set the way it should be. This happens with a bunch of movies now.

my thoughts exactly superman....

make sure the internal volume is at 'zero'. tons of obtrusive noises result from bumping it up to '2'. It's ok that the tv/AVR volume is higher as long as there are problems (such as those you are reporting)

Can you list the movies this occurs with? can't say I've experienced this yet

This is a well documented problem on many other AVR forums.

well the only issue ive had with sounds similar were only on dts ma titles. some 'crackling' during the initial logos for the movie when you first put it in. and thats it. never during a movie so i find that odd. but not concerned enough to investigate. its not a lot of crackling or too loud. never had an issue with any other format or codec.

hmmm thats odd. I have never heard crackling of any kind when watching movies on my ps3!

Checked the connections on your receiver?

Tried a different HDMI cable?

My PS3's audio doesn't snap, crackle, nor pop.

It could be the wire connections to your speakers, I would check those.

Actually, I used to get that a lot when playing GHIII, but never WT or anything else. It would persist even after removing the game but I would just disconnect everything and reconnect and somehow it would be fine. But also, it wasn't light crackling, I mean you couldn't not notice it. It scared the hell out of me at first.

Try disabling 176.4kHz in your PCM output.

This didn't work unfortunately. Another test I have done is disable the center and use only my front 2 channels. Same result. I have tried switching HDMI cables. HDMI ports, and checking all of the terminal connections on my receiver. I have also tried using another PS3. My next test is to try using the Sony BDP-S1.

BACsader,

I unfortunately noticed this problem several months ago. If you search for "gimpgutter" on Google, my posts will probably turn up somewhere. As I have stated in these posts, I have found no solution.

Since then, I said 'screw it' and built myself an HTPC with a bluray drive. Sure enough, there is absolutely no crackle, no issue and I'm still sending the audio as LPCM via HDMI to my receiver. The only difference is the bluray player itself: PS3 vs. HTPC. The receiver, cables, speakers, etc are all identical.

Sony dropped the ball on this one and I'm sorry that the few of us who clearly hear the crackle can't get any justice. For the 98% of people out their whose ears are not good enough or whose system is incapable of detail, they will never know.

Let me know how the test goes with the Sony BDP-S1. I was contemplating buying a standalone player, but decided an HTPC would function better for all my music.

Out of curiosity, what components make up your system?

Had this too. Band of Brothers was a big offender. Now on my DMP-BD35, problem is gone. Go figure. I use my PS3 solely as a DVD player/media center now, never for BDs. No more crackle.

I wouldn't say It sounds like Crackling..but I notice it does sound like noise of some sort when sending out audio through LPCM while watching movies. I notice this 'airy' noise especially with normal DVD's and in that case I switch it to bitstream and it rid's itself of the problem. I also notice this same noise when in TrueHD, not so much with DTS-MA

And yes it bothers me a little

Well, I got a standalone Blu-ray and I am bitstreaming now. The noise is still there telling me that it is a characteristic of the Blu-ray disc and not so much the PS3. Sometimes having hearing like this is a bad thing.
