My favorite movie opening is Superman: The Movie. I love John Williams' score and the credits flying towards you!

I don't know about best, but Urban Legends had a pretty good opening scene with the guy in the back seat. Then the rest of the movie was crap.

Armageddon. Set the tone for the whole movie with the opening sequence.

That is what I was going to say! X2 has one of the best openings I can think of off the top of my head.

Full Metal Jacket (Srgt. Hartman, absolute genius)
The Big Lebowski (Pissing on The Dude's rug. It really tied the room together)
Zodiac (The music added soo much)

I thought the 1989 Batman and the Dark Knight both had great openings that helped set up the film's pacing and overall mood.

The two best opening sequences for me have got to be,

The Matrix (I remember thinking, "WTF is going on" in a strongly positive way)
Fight Club ("Everyone talks in vowels with a gun in their mouth.")

P.S. For those praising the MI:3 opening, I found that it ruined the intensity of the entire film. By telling me where everything/everyone was going to end up, I found there was no need for me to witness everything leading up to that point. I really go the feeling that the project should have been made into a 10 minute short film. The technique of revealing part of the climax at the beginning of the film has worked an insanely small number of times for me. Surprisingly though, one of my fave opening uses it (see above). I still enjoy MI:3. However, cropping out that "ending introduction" would have created a much more enjoyable ride for me. Just my opinion.

Gotta be "STAR WARS" (aka 'Episode IV: A New Hope').

"Raiders of the Lost Ark" is a great one too, as is "Blade Runner". For a more recent film, I thought the first half-hour or so of "Wall-E" was brilliant.

Without a doubt the BEST opening scene in a movie for me is the opening of ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST. Sergio Leone nailed it!!!

Others:
BLADE
THE PROFESSIONAL
SUSPIRIA
SAVING PRIVATE RYAN
THE KILLER

By the way... can we get all the above mentioned titles out on Blu-Ray already!!!

Top three of all time:

-Star Wars IV -- nothing like it ever before -- jaw dropping
-Indy Jones Raiders -- the audience cheered and applauded
-Jaws -- just plain scary

Nothing like them before, nothing like them since

Lots of great examples mentioned.

A few more:

Mulholland Drive
Blue Velvet
Arlington Road
There Will Be Blood - I love how no dialogue is spoken for the first 14.5 minutes, but it sets the scene perfectly.
