Default Tom Cruise: Past or Present?

Is Tom still the man? Is Tom done? What is the future of Tom Cruise?

Thoughts, opinions?

Honestly I was never a fan of him. Never felt like watching Mission Impossible or Minority Report, haven't seen his older classics, and if I saw his recent movies it wouldn't be for him.

I did like him in Tropic Thunder.

He was good when he was younger. He left the rez at some point, and I don't watch many of his newer movies ever since the couch jumping incident. He was pretty good in Tropic Thunder tho.

I think he is a fine actor. He might be a slightly better actor now than he was before, but marginally different.

That being said, I wouldn't want that man promoting my movie. I would be deathly afraid of what he would say.

He has his moments... both good and bad. I thought Minority Report and A few Good Men were great. So was Magnolia, and what guy doesn't like Top Gun. It seems like the secret to getting him do a good movie, is to have him do just the acting. When he gets involved producing and executive producing or involved in any other kind of way, things seem to go a bit wrong. lol

Tom Cruise is a fantastic actor. His best movies are Far & Away and The Last Samurai.. and I loved his small part in Tropic Thunder. I enjoyed Minority Report as well. Haven't seen Days of Thunder or Top Gun yet.

Haven't seen Top Gun (1986)?!?!? What planet are you from?

That is Tom's THE claim to fame... in all honesty.

And Days of Thunder (1990)? That's a double bogey... right there.

Seriously, you need to get on that. He was the All-American boy. Then he turned to placenta.

Did you not like Tony Scott or something?

Nothing very amazing about Days Of Thunder. Ok Top Gun had the moments with the planes and everything but truly Days Of Thunder is nothing more then Top Gun on wheels

Maybe he is young. Days of Thunder could be considered a guilty pleasure but I doubt any guy born before 1975 hasn't seen Top Gun.

And 300 (2007) was just Braveheart (1995) with CGI. That doesn't mean it wasn't great.

i think he was and still is a fine actor, but his roles recently have not been as good as past ones. do i agree with/like him as a person? usually not. but his acting abilities are a completely separate issue (same view goes with mel gibson)

I think his acting is adequate. His best role to me, the one that did show some variance in the role was Born On The Fourth of July. The sci-fi that he did (forget the name at the moment) was a great flick but honestly, anyone could have done that role just as well or better I think. The Firm was fairly good as well and I really like Mission Impossible (the first one).

I do find him kinda wooden in his acting. Even in War of the Worlds, he didn't impress me at all so as a result, I never see a film because he's in it like I do with Denzel Washington or say, Gene Hackman... these are a couple of actors that tend to be great in great films fairly consistantly overall.

For me I do the best I can to block these actors/actresses points of view in real life when I watch movies. I have always enjoyed every movie I have watched that tom was in. I think hes a good actor.

+1

DDL could secretly be some sort of psycho murder, and if I found out he was it would not make me think less of his movies.

Actors personal lives should not make them a better or worse actor lol

Not that impress by Braveheart for that matter, I find 300 to be a way more fun movie. There are so many historical innacuracies in Braveheart that I am surprise you don't see a dude with a machine gun in there somewhere 300 is just pure fun and with the elements taken from the comic books just turn's it into a popcorn movie while Mel Gibson wanted to make a real account of the life of William Wallace, he failed on that point. There is taking historical liberties and then there is making a different story. If you want to take Braveheart as nothing more then a popcorn movie then yes I will give you that it's a lot of fun but that wasn't what Mel Gibson was looking for.

For those of you that are young...or for those who havent seen any of his older movies....treat yourself. Go find an older Cruise movie and pop it in the player. Dont let the whole 'couch thing'..or whatever news is out there currently about him dissuade you from watching some of his older stuff (Rainman...Born on 4th of July..to name 2). He isnt that bad..not at all.
