Default PS3 wireless speed question

Is anyone getting more than around 15mbps using the PS3 in wireless mode for data transfers? Reason I ask is I'm trying to figure out if my router is the culprit limiting the bandwidth for some streaming media, or if it's the wireless adapter in the PS3. I'd rather not stretch a cable if it can be solved by getting a new router.

I have a similar question as I wonder when I play games online if I should just connect the cable modem to the PS3 directly instead of through a router to improve the connection.

I don't know the exast speed of the wireless, but it is a hell of a lot slower than the 5Gps my hard wired DSL is supplying. Maybe when I get home, I will use the PS3 browser to go to a speed test website just to check it out.

there's alot of factors to take into consideration, you may not have to buy a new router at all.

what's the model of your current router?
what wireless protocol are you using? (A,B,G,108G)
how much distance between the router and the PS3? how many walls and other obstacles or interferences in the way?

The router is some cheap taiwanese thing (Tilgin) I got from my provider, which is why I'm considering replacing it. I'm currently using 802.11G, get a 80% signal. Server is wired using 100mbit to the router. PS3 has line of sight to the router. No walls.

I've been doing some testing and I'm down to either the wireless adapter in the PS3 being crap, or my router. It's kind of annoying because I'm trying to stream some 20mbps mpeg2 files and it can almost play them, but starts skipping.

...well, if one of your neighbors is piggybacking of your signal with wireless b that will also slow it down.

try turning off broadcasting the router name and set in a DMZ.

tilgin? never heard of it. i'm gonna go off the deep end and assume the lack of quality brand-name router is the problem.
if you do decide to go for a new router, keep an eye for a few features: QoS (quality of service), 108G, and powerful transmit power (<15dBm).
also check this thread for ideas.

They basically sell branded and rebranded gear to providers and the like, not end consumers. I still would like to hear if anyone's achieved better transfer speeds than 16mbit to the PS3. A file copy over the network from a DLNA-compliant media server should do the trick (check the task manager of the server to see the network useage).

Plain and simple fact is wireless will always be slower than a direct cable connection. Wireless is a convenience and less hassle then putting in wires. But a wired connection to the cable box or your hub/router is always more reliable and more effieecient than wireless.

I'm running an Airport Extreme 802.11n (yes, thats "n") the "N" is 5 times faster than the "g" which makes it 25 times faster than the "b". I have 3 laptops, 2 xbox360s, and one desktop running and never get lag while playing on xboxlive. perhaps you should upgrade your router to the "n" series. But i know the PS3 is only capable of 802.11G, but this new router would allow multiple devices to access the router and keep the speed that you need for your PS3. Mine is an Apple, but BestBuy sells Linksys and others that are 802.11n.

Cool Wired is faster

But I have no issues with my cable modem and Linksys router with speedbooster. I am linked with my Wii, Laptop, and PS3 and can be downloading on all 3 with very little appreciable slowdown.
