Default Worst UHD EVER!

I feel for the characters but I had to turn on my super high contrast setting to high on my TV and it was still dark as hell. And I know that all movies cant have a happy ending but after sitting through this movie as if the lights were always off,it ends in Shit.

So, you know what’s funny? The 4K HDR digital copy was the same way...extremely dark with the colors pushed way to the extreme. And one day, on iTunes, they fixed the 4K. Still in HDR but they definitely fixed it and it’s looks great now....

Either of you guys have the Panasonic Ub820? This is where the dynamic range setting can be huge. It works like increasing contrast but without the added grain. Was waiting for iTunes to drop to 4.99 but maybe I'll pass now.

Loved this movie. I read it was like a 70's noir and that is a PERFECT reference to go in with. They don't make movies like this anymore usually, at least that I hear about, so if you're looking for something like that look no further. Wonderful performances too, and beautiful visuals. Hope this director gets more work because she has a great eye, and her and the editor nailed the pacing too. Just a wonderful experience.

As for the video... this is one borked disc. The black crush is insane. It's literally unwatchable, because key aspects of the image are buried in darkness. For example there's a scene where Foster is watching something outside the window while holding his gun on the table, but on the UHD the gun is gone. Vanished. Not there, just a sea of black. The opening, pivotal scene of criminal behavior is so buried in black you have no idea what's going on, and don't even recognize who someone is because they were so buried in black during their intro. There's a scientific term for this, and it's called "completely f**cked."

If you put your television brightness up to insane levels some of the detail is actually there, but the HDR buries it in black at anything approaching normal settings. Maybe there's some gamma/brightness tweaks you could make to turn it into something acceptable without blowing it out to grey completely, but I doubt it. I had to but brightness at max to see anything near the normal detail seen on the BD.

Speaking of the BD, it looks okay. In the caps thread it was talked about that it looks grey and light in blacks, but to me it just looks like a ton of modern digitally shot movies. Yes proper HDR would help it, but we don't have that, so is this that terrible? Not really. Looks like Star Trek Beyond and a bunch of other movies like that. I did notice some banding in a few scenes, but nothing consistent.

Not sure what you mean. You had me rush to Amazon Canada but all I see is a standard Blu-ray (and it doesn't look to be from Sony?). The 4k on Amazon Canada is the US version.

If this ever gets released by another company in another country though, I'd likely get it.

As others have said, the UHD is way too dark. I switched to the blu-ray after about 10 minutes which was much more enjoyable. The day time scenes are a little better, but the night scenes (which includes the first 20 minutes) are close to unwatchable.

I took a look at Galveston on the PC again reg. the dark image and tried to "fix" the image solely by what my monitor has to offer.

Simply switching the Gamma setting from PC to MAC works wonders here (this should translate to 2.2 (PC) vs. 1.8 (MAC)).

It really is very watchable this way (still dark, but not drowned in darkness anymore). I'd pick this over the BD at any rate now. So you might want to give the disc a try with Gamma 1.8 again. (EDIT: in SDR of course)

Not to impune your work sir, but it still looks riddled with black crush eating up the shadows which would piss me off royally, so this won't be one that I'll be picking up any time ever. I'm sure you've improved it greatly, but it's not to my taste.

Yes, the black crush remains, but it looks much better imo and better than the BD in particular now.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't buy it (the disc I mean) either, but I already bought it and have to deal with it.

I heard that, I've had to come up with a few solutions of my own with some problem transfers.

Hmmm I annoyingly don't have numerical gamma settings, but I'll lower it a ways and see what I think. There's detail you can get back by raising brightness and there's detail you can't, but maybe this is a decent happy medium. The UHD really does look a lot better in every other way so it would be nice to salvage it.

I forget how into 70's style noir you are, but if you like stuff like Night Moves or Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia then I really do recommend this movie a lot. However you feel like seeing it.

Default I loved this movie.

I dont know if its the teenager in me or me wanting to take care of this beautiful woman in trouble but i really enjoyed this movie. I thought the acting was top notch and the cinematography splendid. The plot was bizarre but I really felt for the characters in this film. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys a good drama. Not sure if a woman would feel the same about it or not however. Watched it on appletv and am considering the 4k for my collection.

Agree about the movie but beware, the UHD is very dark to the point of being unwatchable in the night scenes. This was fixed within days on the streaming versions. The blu-ray is much less frustrating to watch.
