Is this 2K or 4K resolution? The reason I ask is because 2019 will be the film's 30th anniversary, and I don't know if it will get a 4K restoration Blu-ray (standard 1080p disc) for its anniversary.

It's 2K.

What a bizarre response. Did you just start watching film yesterday?

The tint/filter was used to enhance the 'heat' and its effect on the characters. The weather is practically a character in the film.

The US blu looks nothing like any other version previously available.

I did a lot of research on its psychology and worked on a controlled palette that pretty much stayed in the warm range – yellows, reds, earth tones, ambers – and tried to stay away from blues and greens, which have a cooling effect.

Spike and I had met at NYU grad school. Before we started a film, we would have movie-watching sessions, to get on the same page, to find the vocabulary we wanted. For this, we looked at The Third Man, for the canted angles, and then the cinematography of Jack Cardiff, who worked on Black Narcissus, A Matter of Life and Death and The Red Shoes. The use of colour in those films still inspires me.

The colors look great, but I see some jaggies in those caps. Not sure if it's the method they were captured with, or the page that is hosting the caps that causes them.

As others have said, it's not supposed to have "natural skin tones and complexions". The orange tint is supposed to help visually sell the idea of "the hottest day of summer" in the film. Which, based on the comparisons between the Universal Blu-Ray and every other release of the film going back to it's theatrical release, it was successful at.

Only seen it on DVD.

(Having looked at the comparisons above)
Can't imagine seeing it without the orange tint.

Doesn't suit the film.

It should be noted that the lack of tint on the US Blu-ray was an alteration made by Dickerson himself (confirmed by someone who met him at a Q&A and asked him about it). I don't remember if he gave his reasons.

Here's the quote from a reviewer at HTF

Quote:
I had the opportunity to meet Ernest Dickerson today at Sunset Gower Studios, and was able to speak with him about the Universal Blu-ray and the Criterion laserdisc of this title. Ernest confirmed to me that he supervised the color timing of both the Criterion disc and the 2009 Universal Blu-ray. He acknowledged that the original theatrical run of the film and the Criterion disc were timed with a distinctly warm filter. He said that when he timed the Universal Blu-ray, he did not do that. He feels the movie still looks very hot, and that the colors are quite saturated. But this is a matter of him revisiting a movie he had not seen in many years and approaching it with his perspective today. In response to what he heard about the complaints, he said that if there was a mistake made here, he was the one who made it. But he didn't feel this was a bad transfer or that Universal did a bad job with the release. He also confirmed that Spike Lee saw and approved of the release.

It doesn't look like Amazon is selling it, just third parties. Odds are it'll get a standard release, so I'll probably pick it up then.

Hrmm, I do think the warmer color scheme is superior, but the German release looks DNR'd.

Grain is definitely present on it. Could just be a fine grain structure. Is this a new scan by the way? It kind of looks like the same one Universal used, just re-graded.

The German release is a nice approximation of the Criterion colors, but it looks more like the whole film was given a tint rather than just warming up certain colors. There are still blues in the Criterion (in the sky behind Radio Raheem in the LoveHate grab and in the metal on the payphone pic with Spike) and whites are also warmed up. But it's better than the Universal. For now, I'll keep both, until Criterion hopefully upgrades theirs.
