B&W 89 Minutes 1.37:1 Not Rated
Jealousy, loyalty, and a family feud between two brothers are all at play in The House of the Seven Gables, based on the classic novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne (Twice-Told Tales). The sudden death of Jaffrey (George Sanders, The Lodger) and Clifford (Vincent Price, Tales of Terror) Pyncheon’s father provides the vengeful and vindictive Jaffrey with the perfect opportunity to get his brother out of the way and seize the family fortune. Framed for murder and forced to leave his fiancée (Margaret Lindsay, Scarlet Street) behind, Clifford is sent off to prison, where he befriends Matthew Holgrave (Dick Foran, Fort Apache), the descendent of the Maule family, with whom the Pyncheons have a long history of turbulence. Can the two join together to foil Jaffrey, or are the families destined to repeat the mistakes of the past and live out the curse of their ancestors? Joe May (Asphalt) directed this classic thriller featuring Cecil Kellaway (Harvey) and Alan Napier (The Uninvited).

I haven't seen it before, but I'll definitely be picking it up for my Vincent Price collection I was worried that after the release of The Tingler the Price love would end since there's no more horror pictures left to release on Blu-ray, so I'm excited to see Kino digging into his earlier output. I'm especially excited to see Price face off against George Sanders! I can't imagine that pairing being anything less than a fun time.

The House of the Seven Gables is an actual place and it still stands:

Quote:
In 1668, sea captain John Turner built a multi-room house on the Salem waterfront. Three generations of Turners lived in the home, increasing its size and the family’s wealth, until John Turner III lost everything and the house was sold to another mariner, Samuel Ingersoll, in 1782. Upon Ingersoll’s death, daughter Susanna inherited the great mansion, where she was often visited by her younger cousin, Nathaniel Hawthorne.

The House of the Seven Gables is a Gothic novel written beginning in mid-1850 by American author Nathaniel Hawthorne and published in April 1851 by Ticknor and Fields of Boston. The novel follows a New England family and their ancestral home. In the book, Hawthorne explores themes of guilt, retribution, and atonement, and colors the tale with suggestions of the supernatural and witchcraft. The setting for the book was inspired by the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion, a gabled house in Salem, MA and now a national landmark and museum.

The actual House of the Seven Gables is now a museum although the rural estate
around it is now a thriving housing development and business area not to mention
a mainstay of the tourist industry:

Turner-Ingersoll Mansion business hours

Informative pictorial study of the house and family and haunting:

Read the novel, read the history, visit the house, buy the blu-ray.
