Do 2K DI's matter?

Because it's DNR'd to death and looks terrible.

Anyway, haven't watched the videos yet, maybe later, but 2k DIs benefit less from detail and such yet still benefit a lot from HDR and WCG. I don't really pay much attention to what is 2k or 4k DI-wise. However I do pay special attention to 4k OCN scans of older movies, as those blow my socks off.

Older movies don’t even have DIs, they get re-scanned from OCN in 4K. 2K DIs don’t really matter that much, given that the ups along is pretty good and that HDR is a bigger benefit. Even the resolution the film was shot at doesn’t seem to matter. Colour grading choices, choice of lenses and so on factor more into how the film looks than the resolution.

The answer to 2K DI upscales mattering to quality is no. Case/studio/investment depending. The answer to 4K DI being better is no. Not universally.

So basically we are back to square one which is that you take each 4K UHD at face value of the content of the eventual native resolution of it's format and judge that resultant PQ. Not pit where it came from against where some other title came from in comparison.

With the average seating distance being 9 feet, the increase in resolution over HD can't be seen by most people who have a 4KTV and are feeding it 4K content. That is why HDR and WCG were added. So there is a noticeable difference between HD and UHD and is not dependent on seating distance.

Plus . . . the only true 100% 4K DI would come from a movie with zero special effects which are only rendered in 2K. The exception would be an all CGI movie (animation).

The short answer is "it depends". You have Independence Day Resurgence that was shot to 4K and got a 4K DI and looks mediocre to say the least and then there's Prometheus which was shot at 2K (it's a 3D natively shot movie) and is 4 years older than ID Resurgence but with its upscaled 2K DI trounces it, Prometheus and Alient Covenant both got 2K DI's but look outstanding.

4K VFX is rare for movies but not unheard of. Tomorrowland had 4K VFX. Sully had 4K VFX. Even something like American Hustle had 4K VFX.

When bottleneck is not elsewhere in pipeline DI matters.

Would love to see 4k animated feature with clean and not overly blurry estatics, should look amazing.

Didn’t The Dark Knight also have 4K VFX for IMAX scenes?

Isn’t it strange that most digital workstations in post + servers are not up to the task of chewing through 4k digital content? I know it takes time for technology to become economical but shouldn’t every post artist be working with software and hardware to maximize GPU rendering?

I might be wrong here but I think most 3D software is still primarily CPU dependent as far as rendering times go, although higher-end rigs are likely using Quadro cards as well to maximize things like viewport performance. I think for most films 4K VFX is mostly a matter of time and money, rather than not having the available tools.

I was restricting my lil' list to DI-finished movies but yes, the IMAX stuff in TDK was done up to 8K. Dunkirk's VFX was 6K. Anyone clock the one common denominator, DI or no DI, to all the mentioned movies?
