Well, it is over 2 hours.

The total length is daunting, but thanks to the heads-up, I simply fast-forwarded to the two-hour mark and listened to the info about MASSACRE and then CREEP BEHIND THE CAMERA.

You still thrilled that they cancelled the release for years on the off chance that they might come up with extras?!! You say the movie has never had any extras, but it has also never had a watchable print. I would gladly give up on extras if we could have a great print of this on Blu-ray that we could have all enjoyed watching over the past few years.

I check this thread every few months for news. This and "The Farmer" are the two releases I'm dying for (I saw them both in the theater when I was a teenager). I hope they see the light of day, as I'm not getting any younger.

I remember when this was first announced and someone suggested that this release would never happen. I think we will all die of old age before this will ever see the light of day.

Synapse puts out great product but I've never understood why they preemptively announce these things. They announced this title so long ago that I didn't even know it was supposed to happen. Five years? Really?

I remember back after they announced their Suspiria release, I'd see occasional comments from people inquiring about it on the Synapse Facebook page, and they'd respond to these people with really snide, sometimes outright rude comments. It kind of put me off of them as a company to be honest. Sorry, but if you're going to announce a release like this (especially of a beloved cult title), don't get miffed if the film's fanbase (aka virtually your only customers) starts asking questions.

They'd be better off shutting their mouths and not making the announcement until the restoration is finished, but they've never been able to do this it seems.

It's especially cruel with this title because it's not like we have decent old DVD releases to fall back on.

What you're asking for is already happening right now. For all intents and purposes they haven't announced or provided any sort of a substantial update on anything they are working on since 2017. We know that work has been happening on Hot Dog the movie thanks to some recent instagram activity...

...but outside of that, we know that they moved offices in the later half of 2018, and were given a never ending stream of whatever theater their Suspiria master was playing in, but we really haven't heard anything regarding upcoming releases from them since the end of 2017.

I guess that's true, but they've got plenty of catching up to do. I know the business is operated by only two guys, but it seems to me that they tend to bite off more than they could chew between new announcements, current projects, and shipping out all of their orders.

That was probably me, as I have always said (regarding this title) that "I'll believe it when I see it."

Synapse is about the fourth US label that has attempted to release this title, without success. I suspect that the film's director or producer is the center of the problem.

Will this come out? I'll believe it when I see it.

I don't disagree.

However, Synapse's reputation and track record may actually be a Hitchcockian McGuffin, in this case.

As I mentioned, Synapse is probably the 4th US label to attempt to release this film, without success. I feel that there is more at play here than just Synapse's spotty release pattern.

I'm only speculating, but four labels failing to release this title over a roughly ten year period may be indicative of bigger issues than Synapse.

I'll believe it... (everybody can finish that sentence for me).

How dare you bump this thread without any actual update, and getting my hopes up for no reason.

Anyway, it looks like the director of this film is a difficult person to be in touch with, being that he (apparently) stopped responding to Synapse. Hopefully ONE DAY, he’ll get back in touch with them or they’ll just release the film without his involvement if they can.

Either way, it really looks like Synapse announced this way too prematurely if it’s been FIVE YEARS and it’s still not out. They did recently respond on their FB page that it’s “Still in production. No release date.” Those are the exact same words they’ve been saying for years, but at least we know it’s still (supposedly) coming.

Maybe if we keep complaining about it they might do something. So I think this thread should be kept alive.

Complaining about THE ABYSS hasn't exactly lit a fire under James Cameron.

He's too busy working on a dozen Avatar sequels to worry about such things.
