I hope that tour that Disney is sponsoring will help show the consumer what the possibilities are set a baseline for understanding. That kind of putting the products in the face of the customer will give meaning and depth to the marketing terms.

that study is flawed as it states only 40% of PS3 know that it has blu-ray

You know that is so retarded that your probably correct. I hear stuff like that so often it blows my mind. Of course it's probably someone from Best Buy or something that told them that.

that's funny. i currently don't own a single PS3 game. i've traded RFOM after i beat it. everything else is crap or on the 360 which i feel has a much better online gaming community. so, i buy all my games on the 360. but, bluray has won me over in a hurry. i went from owning 1 to 7 just last week. i haven't played a game on my ps3 since feb-march....

Those same idiots probably bought a $3000+ HDTV and connect it to their SD cable box with an S-video connection and think they are watching HD TV. I'll bet the #'s of people doing that are probably like 40% as well. I have run into a number of them myself. When I explained it to them, they couldn't believe it. So I guess spending money doesn't automatically make you smart, and having all the latest and greatest toys doesn't mean you know what you are talking about.

Believe it: (many) people really are that stupid. Hence the car commercials with "Professional driver on closed course, do not attempt" in small print. Or coffee cups from fast food joints that contain the warning "Contents may be hot".

See! I knew that there a lot of non techies buying PS3, that use composite cables. However Blu-ray is not mainstream yet, it's only been out less than a year. Remember that PS3 sales number in the millions. 20% of 1 million is 50,000. Does not seem like much but, soon people will realize that PS3 will play BLu-ray, and when they do, they will buy it even if they got 2nd hand SDTV and using an RF modulator.

The Wii on the other is yes cheap compared to the "next gen" console. However I seen an AARP mag that my folks had lying around that featured the Wii in one of the articles. They stated that Wii is good for old people as well as young as motion controls help blood circulation and can count for light aerobic exersize. They featured a 56 year old lady who does not like how normal games cause kids to lazy about, while being a expert Wii bowler and proud of it. Guess what system grandparent's are going to get for their grandchildren, now?

Wii is doing well because of untouched market demographic: Girls (notice how many girls dig DS and Wii) and Old people (becuse of it's uniqueness and the fact they can play too, and even win). While MSFT and Sony is franticaly aiming for very small in comparison teen male/teen like male market with more shooter games.

Cool It blows my mind

that Sony included such a crappy connection for such a high end system. BUT, it blows my mind even more that people would pay $600 for a console and not understand what it does or why they are spending the money. More money than brains I guess.

It is for this exact reason that I've been saying, ever since the Blu-ray drive inclusion was announced, that Sony should have been including a Blu-ray demo disc in every box! How better to advertise the new format than by having EVERYONE IN POSSESSION OF THE HARDWARE look at a Blu-ray disc case and say, "Hmmm, I wonder what this is? Let me pop it in and find out!" A simple 5 minute video explaining what the Blu-ray drive is capable of would have blown those statistics to the other end of the spectrum.

Hell, even a standard DVD would have blown the numbers through the roof!

Cool

Make that blu logo the size of the box, then have a sony rep come to your door to knock you in the head until you understand the system has a blu-ray player

My point was simply that anyone who would spend that kind of money on a PS3 (around $600 or so) without realizing it is also a Blu-ray disc player was really wasting their money if all they wanted was a game console.
I would not buy it if it didn't have a BD player in it, at least not till it was about half the price it is now.
But because it has a BD player in it, it makes it worth the price, as long as you use it! But with so many dim-witted people out there who got it and did not realize it plays BD, I sure hope that they learn soon and try it out. I hope that someone shows them the awesome quality it can produce.
If all they wanted was to play games, they could have spend @250 and gotten a Wii like I did and play lots of games on that (it even supports Game Cube games for those you didn't know).
I do own a Wii AND a PS3, but that's cause right now my PS3's main purpose is to watch Blu-ray and DVD movies.

I started a thread on this earlier today but the article i read was that 60% weren't aware that their PS3 was able to play Blu-ray movies. It was from a site called PS3 fanboy. I've also read stories of people who don't know you need specific HD channles to see TV in HD. They just think you hook up your cable and *poof* HDTV. I've even heard stories from my local video store of customers trying to put dvds in their vcr.

Did you hear the one about the guy that called the tech support for his computer he just got. He told them his cup holder was broken....

... true story...

the customer service rep had to put him on hold cause he was laughing to loudly after he discovered the guy was using his CD-ROM as a cup holder.

Man you would think the big ass blu-ray logo on the front of the box would clue them in.
I believe those figures though.
I get asked at work constantly about hi-def since I live in a relatively rural area you can only get it from cable/sat and only if you pay extra for the HD package or by putting a huge ass old school antenna onyour house provided that you have a tuner. There eyes start to glaze over after they hear not everything will be HD just cause you have a HDTV.

On the upside if you figure that only about half the people that have a ps3 know about blu-ray. The format is doing exceptionally well and the more press this situation gets the more people might move the ps3 to their HDTV and start getting more blu-ray movies.

Nah... I'll bring Casino Royal, and/or my PotC movies instead. As much as I like 300 and as good as it looked, it's still soft compared to Bond, or Captain Jack Sparrow.
